Private trails twist through 100 acres of mixed forest past ponds and a river; with abundant deer and other wildlife. Explore a winter wonderland before cozying up by the fire with a warm cup of local cider or a home-brewed gourmet coffee. Near skiing (Beaver Valley 30 min), beaches (10 min) and a pioneer village (10 min).
Large rooms in the original 1903 farmhouse with hardwood floors, high ceilings and large bright modern windows give the house a light airy feeling and help keep you connected with the outdoors even when inside. The recent addition doubled the living space while keeping the original feel of the house. It also modernized the services in the house. In a move towards sustainability, the house is heated and cooled using a geothermal system. The kitchen boasts luxury Miele appliances including a steam oven, two regular ovens, a built in whole bean coffee maker, dishwasher, hob and two large fridge/freezer combinations. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, cutlery, basic kitchen tools for cooking and baking and several small appliances - toaster, mixer, hand blender, kettle, mini food chopper.
The property has only been rented since 26 December 2016 and received numerous five star reviews on the original listing site during its first year. The owners would prefer to make all future bookings through this site and have deactivated the other listing.
All mattresses, pillows, bath towels and bed linens were new for January 2017.
The property is rural so the internet is satellite based. The fastest download speed available is 10 Mbps and severe weather may impact download speeds and availability.
The house and property are fully accessible except for the linen closet, barn, garage and bunkie. Access to the bunkie can be discussed. Basement stairs are steep and uneven. Guests should also avoid walking in any planted areas in the fields being farmed to avoid damaging crops. All planting fields have a wide pathway around them to make getting around the property easier. Bring your walking shoes, the property is 1 km deep and the trails twist and turn and climb up and down hills.
All entrances are located above ground level by at least four steps. All bedrooms and bathing facilities are on the second floor. You may need to enter the old basement to turn on the water when you arrive. For these reasons, this property is unsuitable for guests who cannot manage stairs without difficulty.
All laundry detergents, dish soaps and cleaning products used in the house are eco-friendly, biodegradable and free of harmful, toxic chemicals. We are trying to preserve the environment; support planet friendly (Canadian) manufacturers; and limit the chemicals going into our septic system. **Please note that NOTHING other than human waste and toilet paper should be flushed as anything else will cause very serious and expensive damage to the septic system. We ask all guests to please respect and comply with this policy.
In winter, the mailbox and street number may be buried by snow, so be aware that you may need to look for the house. You should recognise it easily in daylight. It will be hard to see at night because there will be no lights on.
Books, board games and some toys are provided in the upstairs library for use by guests. There is a basketball "court" behind the barn and a basketball has been provided in the closet next to the mud room. Toboggans can be found in the garden shed. There is a small hill near the barn and a much larger hill behind the perennial garden. There are also a few pairs of skates if they happen to fit. If you do skate on the ponds, be sure to test the ice first. Any skating or tobogganing is at your own risk.
Hiking – You can walk the trails or between the fields on the property. The land is farmed, so please be respectful of the crops. The property is approx. 1 km deep from the road and a hike to the back takes between 60 and 90 minutes round trip. Access to the cabin is not included in the rental at present as there is no toilet facility. If you get lost at all, listen for the road and follow the sound back to the house.
Security System – I can arm and disarm this from my phone, so it will be disarmed before your arrival and rearmed at your check-out time. Cameras will remain active at all entrances to the home during your stay.
WiFi - is available but it is satellite linked so may be unavailable in inclement weather. The password is taped to the underside of the router in the new basement.
Kitchen – Sugar, coffee beans, and spices are provided for as long as supplies last. You open the coffee maker from the right side (the whole front opens). If you use it, it needs to be cleaned daily – there is a cleaning cycle but you also need to manually clean the water and grinds inside, plus the drip tray. If the red thing pops up in the drip tray, it is about to overflow so please empty it asap. If you aren't into labour intense coffee, then you will need to bring grounds for the Bodum.
The ovens are quite small. You can cook a 10 pound turkey, but a 20 pound bird would be a real challenge. Bakeware and roasting pans are provided that will fit in the ovens.
DANGER warning. - there is an empty and unplugged fridge and freezer in the basement. The doors need to stay open to prevent mould growth. If you let your kids into this basement, please warn them of the dangers of playing inside appliances (that there is an airtight seal and no way to open an appliance from inside so they can suffocate very quickly before anyone finds them).
