Surrounded by vineyards, with glorious views of the village of Menerbes, Mas des Oliviers provides the ultimate in easy living in the heart of the Luberon's "golden triangle" of Gordes – Bonnieux – Menerbes. Only 40 minutes from Avignon TGV and 1 hour from Marseilles airport, as you drive through the gates you will feel as if you have arrived at an oasis of beauty, tranquillity and possibility, from which you can explore the very best of Provence.
The ancient stone walls of the house conceal a light and airy interior with unusually expansive living spaces; a large modern kitchen; and 5 double bedrooms, all ensuite. The 2 acre garden includes a large pool and a tennis court, as well as an exquisite "jardin a la francaise", lawns, lavender field, cypress trees and olive grove. And the village of Menerbes, with its bakery, grocer, pharmacy and restaurants, is less than a 15 minute walk, its church bells easily audible from the house.
The Ground Floor
Much of the ground floor is taken up by a huge L-shaped space, some of it vaulted. It contains a dining table for 10 at its centre. At one end of the L is a pretty bureau with sofa bed that can accomodate 2 people (170cm), armchairs and a sense of being away from it all. At the other end of the L is another sitting room with large fireplace, high beamed ceiling and dramatic views – of Mont Ventoux in the distance to the North and of the garden and olive grove to the East, through the double doors.
To the left of the entrance hall is the spacious modern kitchen which will satisfy the keenest of cooks. The large marble-topped island has a 5 ring induction hob with extractor fan; a wall unit contains 2 ovens, a microwave oven and a large plate warmer (all Miele) as well as an American style fridge. A Magimix food processor and high quality saucepans, frying pans and utensils are provided alongside plenty of crockery, stored in a combination of modern drawer units and Provencal dressers. Double sink and Miele dishwasher help ease the pain of tidying up and a large table offers seating for 6.
A door leads straight off the kitchen onto the dining terrace which contains two large tables – one under the mulberry tree for shade, the other in a sunnier position for those who like it hot. A total of 14 cushioned chairs around these two tables enable entertainment on a large scale. The terrace is surrounded by wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle, box, rosemary and oleander.
Off the kitchen there is also a large utility room including washing machine, drier, ironing facilities; and off the hall is a downstairs WC.
There is a spacious ground floor bedroom with double bed and an ensuite shower room that contains walk-in shower, basin and WC . Private terrace.
Walk up the stone staircase to experience the wonderful second "salon". This double height room is 10 m square, containing a table to seat 6; comfortable sofas around a fireplace with TV and DVD player; and armchairs in a separate corner, with views from here up to Menerbes. Grand Piano for musiciens.
The master bedroom contains a double bed 180 x 200 cm (6' wide x 6'8" long). Its ensuite bathroom contains a bath, walk-in shower, 2 basins and a separate WC.
Bedroom 2 has a double bed, 180 x 200 cm. It has access to 2 balconies – one wisteria covered – which create an atmosphere of great charm. Its ensuite bathroom contains a large walk-in shower, basin and WC.
Bedroom 3 has a double bed 160 x 200 cm (5'4" wide x 6'8" long). Its windows offer gorgeous views of the garden. Its ensuite bathroom contains walk-in shower, basin and WC.
Bedroom 4 has a double bed 160 x 200 cm which can easily be split to make two single beds, each 80 x 200cm. It has a charming bathroom containing walk-in shower and sink; and a separate WC.
The salons, the master bedroom and bedrooms 3 and 4 have air conditioning.
And then there is the magical garden. Those who are looking for sunlit beauty will find it in the jardin a la francaise, with its box edged beds of roses, perovskia, gaura and hibiscus; or in the grove of 50 olive trees; or on the lawns around the pool. Approach the lavender field for an exquisite scent from June to September; and the large plane tree and the umbrella pines provide shade, as do the parasols. Garden furniture includes sunloungers, 4 Lafuma anti-gravity chairs, 2 sofas and 2 armchairs (all cushioned) as well as several occasional tables.
The fabulous pool is 12 x 6 m and has a hard roll top. The salt-based treatment keeps chlorine levels to a minimum. 3 massage jets add to the fun, as does a fountain facility at one end.
The tennis court was installed in 2015. Its amazing setting – vineyards on one side, scented lavender on the other, and with breathtaking views of the village of Menerbes – may be a bit distracting to all but the most focussed of tennis players. Tennis racquets and balls are provided.
