About Joy Massey
My husband,Michael is shown in the owner photo sitting at our cabin writing the bio of my father, The General, who was born 3 miles from the site of this private hermitage. My name is Joy Massey, and my father, General James W. Little grew up as a very poor child in the Kentucky foothills of the Appalachian Mountain Range. He literally walked out of these hills to attend college at the University of Kentucky, and went on to become a highly decorated General Officer in the Armed Forces. He was a fighter and test pilot, and ended his career as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Vietnam. He traveled the world and could have lived anywhere , but chose to build this, his last home, with his own hands on the beloved soil of his birthplace. He lived here until his death.
Joy Massey purchased this Cabin in 1975
Why Joy Massey chose Beattyville
The General's Cabin is a beloved family property that is currently owned by myself, The General's Daughter. I lovingly restored this 1 of a kind cabin, beginning in 2004, as I wanted it to be enjoyed and shared by all. The cabin also has the added benefit of being designed and built by a unique and courageous man who valued solitude and beauty. You can see his work in the placement of the kitchen windows, in the stunning front door made from black walnut, and in the quirkiness of his design throughout the cabin.
What makes this Cabin unique
We have rented this property to travelers over the last 13 years and I want to continue to share the nature and beauty it is surrounded by with other like minded people. I love sitting on the front porch overlooking the forest and all its delights. Deer roam the property, red fox can be seen on occasion and the rustling of the trees on a windy night is like nothing else you will ever hear. Rain on the tin roof is such a delight and a sound many have never experienced. A walk out to the front meadow will offer you a stunning star filled sight, and meteor showers are spectacular. Enjoy your own private stocked pond nestled in the woodlands. Hike the wandering carved out trails that dot the property. All who come to the cabin say there is something special about this beloved family home. I say that feeling is due to the special couple who inhabited the space for so many years ( My Parents). They were warm and inviting and fun and knew how to enjoy themselves. Many a wonderful evening was spent under this roof by my family, and now I hope by yours.

Amazing quaint cabin with history
We had an amazing time as a family. Rich in history and character, this cabin will not disappoint.
Sara, we are so pleased that you and your family had such a good time. Our goal is always to provide everyone who stays with a peak experience. Thank you all for leaving the cabin in such great shape upon your departure. Hope to have you return in the future when time and schedule allow.
So peaceful & unique.
The location is very secluded which is just the kind of quiet I was looking for. What a treat it was to enjoy nothing but the birds singing to each other in the morning! The cabin is a rustic masterpiece. There is so much history behind the cabin & the family that built it. Their biographies (which were available to read on the desk) were very well-written & fascinating. The cabin was very clean & comfy. The bathrooms were immaculate & the kitchen/dining area had plenty of room to prepare & enjoy meals. My favorite places to relax were the beautiful front porch & the pond. Will definitely be back in the future!
Julie, You were the perfect guest leaving the cabin in such wonderful shape upon your departure. We are so grateful to people like you who help us keep our family property alive and loved. We would love to have you make a return visit.
Would definitely visit again
Family of 5 plus one furry friend really enjoyed our stay. Very thoughtful owners. Provided everything needed for a comfortable retreat!
Lovely Mother's Day Getaway
This place was wonderful! So thought out, charming, rustic and unforgettable. They have everything you need - just being groceries! We loved the privacy of the outdoors. Our dogs enjoyed roaming (supervised) through the trails and sitting on the dock with us while we fished. We enjoyed reading the story of "The General", starring in amazement at his craftiness. Our favorite was the huge glass windows in the kitchen. We spent morning and evening fishing - all five of our party caught at least one fish (bluegill and crappie, the bass were stubborn). This was a sweet mother's day at a very special place.
We are so pleased you and your family enjoyed your stay, and a great big "Thank You" for taking your time to leave a glowing guest book review at the cabin. We love it when guests bring their pooches to enjoy the outdoors. The day after you left we completed a very large enclosed area ( 20 ft. by 40 ft.) under the trees so that all 4 footed family members can enjoy playing while their owners take advantage of our new brick barbecue/fire pit addition. Thanks for leaving the cabin in such great shape upon your departure. Have a wonderful summer, and consider a return visit when time and schedule allow.
