Welcome to the North Shore of Maui, Hawaii!

Maui North Shore ocean-view

Maui by the Sea is a beautiful vacation rental - an ideal ocean-view cottage located on an oceanfront property between Paia and Ho’okipa, on Maui's scenic and exciting North Shore. Our two-story plantation-style cottage has gorgeous views of a sapphire ocean with dancing waves. Simply sit back and relax on the private covered lanai and enjoy the view!

Tropical ambiance with all the comforts of home:

The 500 sq.feet air-conditioned apartment is upstairs (downstairs is the open garage), surrounded by a lovely Hawaiian tropical garden with bamboos, palm trees, gingers, heliconias and fruit trees. The inside is cozy and elegant. A separate bedroom with a queen-sized bed, full bath, and full kitchen complement the layout.

The ocean is your front yard.

Walk out into the front yard, and watch surfers enjoying the beautiful blue waves! Maui by the Sea's property is located right on the ocean, fronting a popular local surf break. The entertainment never stops!

Your cottage is 150 feet from the ocean. (Access to the water is possible but there is no beach in front of the property; it is a rocky shoreline). A sandy beach is 200 yards from the cottage with access for windsurfing, surfing and snorkeling; or if you wish, just sunbathing on the golden sand.

A short drive down the coast takes you to Baldwin Beach, the nicest beach on Maui's North Shore with long long stretches of white sand, crystal clear water, lifeguards, pavilions, and showers.

About Valerie Richter (owner)

Your hosts at the Maui by the Sea cottage: Craig and Valerie Richter

Hi, I am Craig: I was born in Seattle and grew up in Spokane, Washington. I loved sports growing-up, especially tennis. I participated in lots of competitions and later became a tennis coach. As a child my parents brought us to Maui several times and eventually I became a Tennis Coach both on Maui and Kauai prior to moving to Hong Kong for 12 years, after which I returned to Maui, met Valerie and have never left. I have been a dedicated tennis coach here on Maui for over 15 years.

Bonjour, I am Valerie: I was born and grew up in Paris, France and became a sports photographer, working for a Windsurfing Magazine, Planche Mag, in the 80's. As a Windsurfing Photographer I traveled around the world following the Windsurfing World Cup, but of all the places my work took me, I loved Maui the best and on Maui I finally settled in 1989.

We are active in our church and in studying the Scripture. When we aren't looking after our guests, we love to play tennis, hike, ski and travel (though not very often since we have a hard time leaving Maui), and Valerie loves Watercolor and Pastel painting and still takes lots of photographs.

We hope you will come and join us in our little paradise,

Aloha,

Craig and Valerie

Valerie Richter (owner) purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Valerie Richter (owner) chose East Maui

This is a unique spot, ocean front, close to Paia and very central to lots of activities, protected from the wind. Extraordinary view.

The pictures speak for themselves.

We have been in business since 2000.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is very private with its own ocean view. There is a surf spot right in front and close to shore and it is a wild show to watch and hear the surfer catching waves (winter only). Access to a cute little beach is a one minute walk. Perfect for a morning or evening dip.

Once you are done touring or shopping, it is the best to just come home and still have a wonderful and incredible view. This is a very special little nest for honeymooners but also windsurfers and kite boarders.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It was so nice to settle in and make Maui by the Sea home! Valerie is a great host and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. This lovely cottage was the perfect home base as we explored the many sides of the island – coffee at the picnic table on the lawn, grilling on the lanai, puttering about the spacious kitchen - all of these were comforting and relaxing between discovering as much of the island as we could for these two first–time visitors. And such an amazing location, and what a view! Truly epic sunsets! Thank you for sharing your slice of paradise with us!

Lovely cottage with a beautiful view of the ocean

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for “real Hawaii”, I would recommend staying at Maui by the Sea just down the road from Pa’ia town. Imagine eating your meals on the covered lanai and taking in the views of the ocean and the West Maui Mountains. You can watch the humpback whales spouting and breaching. In the late afternoon, walk to the neighborhood beach and see the Hawaiian Green Turtles resting on the sand.

The one bedroom cottage is well equipped. It includes a roomy bathroom, a kitchen with everything a cook would need, and a washer / drier. The bed and furniture were very comfortable. The Wi Fi has a strong signal (that made my husband happy). The grounds are beautifully landscaped with native plants and fruit trees. The owners also grow herbs that added spice to our dinners.

When we arrived, we were greeted by our hosts along with a bowl of delicious fruits. Valerie has a wealth of knowledge about Maui. Several weeks before we arrived, Valerie sent me an e-mail message listing sights to see, places to go, and restaurants to try. Valerie is a wonderful person, so do not feel shy about asking her questions about Maui.

The cottage is conveniently located. We enjoyed the drive to Hana, toured the upcountry, visited the south Maui beaches, hiked the trail to Twin Falls, sat on Ho’okipa Beach watching the surfers, walked Ma’alaea beach, and drove up to the summit of Haleakala National Park to watch the sunrise. If you want to enjoy the experience, you need to make a reservation (see https://www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/haleakala-sunrise-reservations.htm) and bring warm clothes.

Valerie recommended Mana Foods in Pa’ia, and we absolutely loved the selection of natural / organic foods and beautifully grown produce. When we weren’t cooking in, we tried some excellent restaurants including Mama’s Fish House, Flat Bread Company, and Café Des Amis.

It was a blessing to get to know Valerie. She made us feel at home during our stay at Maui by the Sea. Be sure to make your reservation at least six months in advance.

Comfortable, convenient

  • 5 of 5

The hosts here are warm and helpful. The unit itself is very tasteful and clean, seems to have been updated not so long ago. A/C is very effective, though we avoided it at times, preferring the breeze. The kitchen is well enough equipped that we did not eat any meals out (except quick lunches on the road); there is an excellent (kinda hippie) grocery store five minutes away. The view from the porch is spectacular. The bed is comfortable. The shower is very generous with the water pressure. The location is great for lots of north shore activities. Highway noise (disclosed by the owner ahead of time) is not a significant detraction. Nor are the arthropod visitors; the first roach I saw on the porch freaked me out until it up and flew away and I realized it was not remotely interested in infesting. This is, after all, the tropics. If you can be happy outside, why bother staying inside? The rental unit is not on the water (separated from the water by the family's own house) but they welcome you to use a picnic table and two chaises longues right on the edge of the cliff. This of course facilitates the spotting of large seat turtles dining on the apparently abundant seagrass right off the beach.

Maui why did I wait so long

  • 5 of 5

It had been thirty years since I last visited Maui. Older and more interested in something less commercial we picked this charming apartment above the hosts garage on the road to Hana. Four rooms and a porch with bedroom and living room off the porch it was the perfect size. Don't tell the hosts but the first day we moved the couch/sofa bed to face out over the view instead of the TV. We never turned on the tv. Just watched the clouds formations and the ocean. The hosts have created a lounge area in front of their house area with picnic table and chairs. If you just sat there for a week you would probably be happy looking at the ocean, mountains and clouds. You can see and hear the cars on the Hana highway but on the front porch it's less noticeable and down by the ocean not at all. The host is very nice, she was welcoming and provided fruits off and on during the week. She seems to exude a special kindness. I would encourage visitors to definitely go to baldwin beach. Even I went swimming there, warm turquoise water and shade, and explore Paia the beach town with both a beat down and upscale kind of ambiance living side by side. My best trip to Hawaii and Maui is now my favorite island.

Great Cottage Just Outside Paia

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Maui by the Sea. The cottage is exactly as portrayed on the site and the area by the ocean is even nicer, perched right over the water so you can enjoy the view and the roar of the ocean on the rocks below pretty much any time. We enjoyed our morning coffee, sunset drinks and starlight nights in this setting.

As noted, the cottage lives up the pictures and description on the site. We found the bed and other furnishings very comfortable. As far as the highway noise goes, it is noticeable so if you are hypersensitive to that, this may not be the ideal place for you. But the bedroom is on the ocean side and we left the windows open and found that we heard much more of the ocean than we did of the traffic (which really dies down at night).

A big plus for us was that the kitchen is very well stocked, with more pots/pans/utensils than you typically find at VRBOs. We made several meals with ingredients from the nearby farmers market and the natural foods store in town. (There are also several good restaurants in town and in other towns nearby if you don't want to cook.)

Valerie and Craig were excellent hosts. They were very available, providing a lot of helpful information, but not at all intrusive and in fact very sensitive about respecting our privacy. Valerie was easy to deal with and accommodating ahead of our arrival and responsive to any questions or issues we had while we were there. I appreciate that both on the site and in the reservation process Valerie tends to over-disclose any issue, which means you are pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed. We've booked many properties on VRBO and while our experiences have been overwhelmingly positive, you do get some pictures that are taken from angles you can never actually experience on the property. There isn't any of that here.

All-in-all this was a great place to stay that we would stay at again and recommend without reservation to others, especially o folks looking for an area that is a little more offbeat and relaxed than the resorts on the west and south sides.

Perfect cottage for your vacation in Paia

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay! Especially the view of the ocean from the bed and deck, the full sized kitchen, BBQ and covered deck enabled us to prepare our own meals nightly. Hosts are very helpful, generous and kind. Excellent location for enjoying Mama's Fish House and Paia town. The only complaint our entire stay is we found the mattress too soft for our preference. The ocean view seating in the front the property is spectacular! We would return!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We are blessed with a great view. And the cottage having a covered lanai allows our guests to enjoy every meal outdoor, rain or shine. This week, we are having a guest who brought with him his memory foam padding just in case the mattress would be too firm for him. And he has been using it!!! We wish we could have the universal mattress to please everyone. For this reason each time we buy a new mattress we have to choose one that is neither too firm nor too soft. Aloha!

Cozy private cottage

  • 5 of 5

Valerie & Craig were perfect hosts for our recent October stay. Their cottage was as advertised. It was clean, cozy and a great location for those that want to avoid the big resorts but still want convenient access to great food, shopping, ocean views and beach access.

Also, it is only a few miles from the start of the Road to Hana, which we found a big plus because after finishing the scenic but somewhat challenging drive we didn't have to drive another 30 or 60 minutes to a resort on the other side of Maui.

We were anxious to snorkel with sea turtles during our trip to Maui. The public beach is less than a 5 minute walk from the cottage. The beach had several resident green sea turtles just hanging out.

The cottage is surrounded with banana, avocado and orange trees.

We highly recommend this alternative to a big resort or hotel.
