About Lynn Bunn
The owner is a retired seafaring Commander who dropped anchor in Galveston shortly after retiring from 25 years of sailing with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. On one of his sea assignments thru the Carribean, he sailed past Key Largo and swore in the dim dawn of Red Sky in Morning, that a beautiful Mermaid was sighted riding the bow wave. Years later he landed a shore side assignment as Manager of Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary in Florida. During a 10 day Saturation Diving mission in the Underwater Habitat Aquarius off Key Largo, the Commander once again caught a glimpse of the beautiful young Mermaid who once again slipped away thru the reef. One evening while having a Grogg at the Carribean Club (Bogart's Bar), he noticed her at the end of the bar. IT WAS HER!!! The beautiful flowing fin was gone, but the rest of her WAS HER!!! Of all the bars in all the world, She had to be alone in mine!
Lynn Bunn purchased this House in 2017
Why Lynn Bunn chose San Jacinto
Their first home opened to the public on Bolivar, rebuilt as The Commander's Retreat after Hurricane Ike destroyed their original beach home. The 360 degree ocean and bay water views reminded him of his time at sea in the wheelhouse. The home is no longer theirs, but remains a favorite retreat on Bolivar Peninsula and available thru VRBO. Galveston has been their home for years now, and they recently purchased an 1892 two bedroom, two bath home directly behind the fabulous "Hotel Galvez" on the Seawall. A block to the Gulf of Mexico, three blocks to the Pleasure Pier, and a short walk to half a dozen fine restaurants. There's a peek-aboo-view of the Gulf thru the Galvez's Lobby windows!! The famous Sunday Buffet at the Galvez is just half a block away! The owners have 2 Retired Racing Greyhounds so the house is Pet Friendly. There is even a ramp at the back door in case your pet does not handle stairs well.
What makes this House unique
"The Commander and The Mermaid" is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, yet just a short drive if you want to hit Houston, Beaumont, or the casinos in Lake Charles which are just over 2 hours away. Baseball, football, soccer, concerts, NASA Space Center, Houston Rodeo and the Superbowl are less than an hour away. The beach and maritime motif can be seen throughout this beautiful, peaceful retreat. The local attractions of the beautiful Galveston Seaport are just a short walk, or bicycle ride away. The Strand and all its shops and restaurants, Schlitterbahn, Moody Gardens, the Elissa and the Maritime Museum, the Convention Centers, and all the Islands beautiful beaches are just blocks away. The Commander (Alan) and the Mermaid (Lynn) welcome you to their lovely Island getaway!! There continue to be occasional Mermaid sightings just beyond the surf out front of the Hotel Galvez!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is nicely decorated in a quiet neighborhood not too far from the beach. The beds were comfortable, the house was clean and everything we needed was available. They had a really nice back deck but it was just too hot to enjoy it. We would stay again.
The property was as described, but even nicer. Quite well-maintained, with lots of amenities.
The house is obviously loved by its owners! It's on a quiet street, two blocks from the beach and very close to the Pleasure Pier, bars, and casual dining spots. It's a few blocks from the historic district, Bryan Museum, Garten Verein, etc.
The house itself is extremely well-appointed (though I personally would have preferred a drip coffeemaker to the K-Cup system), with a fully-stocked kitchen (dishes, pots and pans, silverware, cutlery, glassware, etc. aplenty). A particularly nice feature is the granite bar in the kitchen which seats 6 comfortably and is extra wide. Beach chairs and a beach pull-wagon are available, as are 2-3 nice outdoor sitting areas, with lots of shade. The back yard is perfect for a dog or two, and the entire property is fenced. Another nice touch is the full bathroom (with shower and washing machine and dryer) off the back porch, convenient for cleaning up directly from the beach. That is in addition to the main spacious full bath (shower-tub combo) inside the house. The steps to the front porch are a bit steep but there are handrails on both sides. (One is a bit loose and could use some attention.) The living room is quite comfortable, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a couch, armchairs, a pub-style table and chairs, and a TV. (We couldn't get the HD to work, if it is so equipped, and it's not a SmartTV, but hey, it's a vacation, not a commitment! Just wanted to let folks know....) A bedroom with queen-size bed, two dressers, night stands and ample closet space, as well as another with twin beds, a dresser, night stands and ample closet space complete the house.
All in all, the Commander and the Mermaid is a charming old home that has been lovingly remodeled and refreshed, near the beach, well designed for pets. We had a most enjoyable stay and plan to return!
Well maintained, cute house in good neighborhood
House was great! Awesome location, short walk to the beach and close to everything. We really appreciated the wagon for our 2 young children and the ramp to the backyard was perfect for our chocolate lab with knee issues. Would definitely stay again!
Perfect get away
We had a wonderful time. Perfect location, beautiful home. Exceeded expectation!!!
My husband and I came in town for a family reunion. We had our two dogs with us. The house had not been cleaned when we checked it but that was just a miscommunication between the owner and cleaner. That was not a big deal to do the laundry and make the beds. The dogs were not a fan of the dogs next door but by the end of our stay they had warmed up to them. We didn’t spend much time in the house because we had planned activities throughout our stay but when we were there is was nice! It’s only two blocks from the beach and near Millers restaurant which is very good! We ate their several times in between events. Outside seating at the house was amazing! We loved sitting out there even tough all you could look at was the back of Hotel Galvez. We would stay here again.
Great experience and relaxing
The house was just as described. Other then a couple of minor housekeeping issues it was as described. They provide beach equipment as well.
