It is one of the oldest and most densely populated residential neighborhoods in DC. It is mostly Federal and late Victorian architecture, wide boulevards, tree lined streets, friendly people, lots of dog parks. There is a park 1/2 a block away with basketball, soccer, and football, among other activities which is quite lively every day and night.
Capitol Hill's landmarks include the Capitol, the Senate and House office buildings, the Supreme Court building, the Library of Congress, the Marine Barracks, the Washington Navy Yard, Shakespeare Theatre, and Congressional Cemetery.
The main non-residential corridor of Capitol Hill is Pennsylvania Avenue, a lively commercial street with shops, restaurants and bars. Eastern Market is an 1873 market on 7th Street SE, where vendors sell fresh meat and produce in indoor stalls and at outdoor farmers' stands and a flea market.
A fun history of the neighborhood:
Barracks Row was the 2005 winner of the Great American Main Street Award. Eighth Street, SE, also known as Barracks Row, was the first commercial center in Washington DC because of a natural harbor in the Anacostia River named St. Thomas Bay. In 1799, the Navy Yard located next to that harbor, and in 1801, Thomas Jefferson selected the site of 8th and I Streets as the first post for the Marine Corps because of its close proximity to the Navy Yard and U.S. Capitol, in case it needed protecting. The first major commercial street of the old Federal City was 8th Street.
The arts come alive on 8th Street SE with beautifully landscaped open spaces that are hubs of artistic expression. Musical and theatrical events abound on the street and in the pocket parks for all to enjoy, and local artisans sell their wares in numerous stores and fairs. Eighth Street SE has a thriving nightlife scene, with many restaurants and music clubs that are enjoyed by patrons in a safe and clean environment. Eighth Street SE offers a unique, pedestrian-friendly shopping, as well as wining and dining experience.
Eastern Market metro (orange/blue/silver) 5 blocks away. Potomac Avenue metro (orange/blue/silver) is 3 blocks
Union Station train station and (red line) metro is 1 mile away.
A 9 Minute $8 Uber ride from the Monuments/Mall/Smithsonian
There is a Safeway with a Starbucks around the corner, CVS up the block. There is a spa, and a nail place, gym at the corner of 13th and Penn. 1/2 mile from Nationals Park and Waterfront.
Bike share 1 block away, lots of bus routes. There is a Zip car out back. Easy walk to coffee shops, restaurants, bars, stores.
Parking and backyard entrance are in the back of the house. The entrance is an alley on D street between 13th and 14th Street.
Great location, very relaxing city living.
