Overview

About the property

5 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, Sleeps 10

See Santa Fe from a luxurious Eyrie on top of the world! That's how you'll feel at Dorthia Garden Retreat & Views, a gorgeous estate on more than an acre overlooking both the city and the mountains.

To say that the views from this large home are "panoramic" is to diminish them: in truth, they are breathtaking in both scope and beauty. Wherever you look, you see either the snowy Sangre de Cristos, the twinkling lights of Santa Fe, the rolling foothills leading down to the Rio Grande Valley, or all of the above! And you don't have to be outdoors to do it: this home is full of enormous, floor-to-ceiling plate-glass windows that can make you feel as though you're hovering over the canyon. You will never, ever tire of the views from Dorthia Garden!

From the moment you pull up on the sweeping drive and see the fountain, you will know you're in for something very special at Dorthia Garden. Ornately carved double doors lead you into a huge common area, bathed in sunlight and furnished with a wealth of ultra-comfortable sofas and chairs. Flop down on the sectional or stretch out in the leather armchair, kick off your shoes, and revel in the knowledge that you need do absolutely nothing except enjoy your vacation in paradise!

One of the best features of Dorthia Garden is its spaciousness. Viga ceilings, a huge fireplace, handsome pillars, and a low dividing wall help to define the common area, but nothing is crowded, from the wide hallway to perfectly-placed furnishings. Your big group can really spread out here without bumping elbows, which contributes to the sense of calm and quiet you will experience even when the kids' computer games are beeping and the grown-ups are cheering over the big game on one of the many HDTVs.

Tear yourself away from this scene of comfort to admire the well-stocked kitchen and dining areas (there are at least 2!) in this house. The kitchen is curved, filled with light, and boasting the latest stainless-steel appliances (including 2 fridges and a second sink in the central island). All you add is groceries; everything else, from cookware and dishes to chef's knives, gadgets, and countertop appliances, is ready for you here.

Adjacent to the kitchen are two dining rooms, each with tables seating 6: one with a cozy breakfast-nook feel despite its large size and jaw-dropping views, and the other with even more panoramic vistas that suggest you are jutting out over a cliff! Hard to imagine a more spectacular setting for meals, games, and family gatherings.

And while the common areas are lovely, the bedrooms at Dorthia Garden are designed for total comfort and pampering. The master suite includes a king-sized bed, full fireplace with a mantelpiece, inlaid viga ceiling, desk, pair of easy chairs, and en-suite bath featuring Jacuzzi, walk-in shower, towel warmer, and dual vanities. You will never want to leave!

The other four bedrooms are all spacious and perfectly appointed, each with a queen-sized bed (one featuring a heavenly canopy, just right for the romantic in the group!) and access to one of the 4.5 bathrooms at Dorthia Garden. Luxe linens and towels await you here, plus a full laundry room to keep all those vacation togs fresh, no matter where your adventures take you.

And the outdoor spaces are just as beautiful as the interior of this home. Several patios offer a mix of sun and shade for your enjoyment during the warmer months, and covered areas provide shelter when the snow begins. There is plenty of seating out here too, so consider dining al fresco and enjoying 360-degree views!

Dorthia Garden may seem to be away from it all, but it's just a short drive north of the city, within easy reach of the Santa Fe Opera, Ski Santa Fe, and the myriad attractions of the Plaza area. No matter what your group wants to explore in northern New Mexico, you have the ideal home base for luxurious comfort when you stay at Dorthia Garden!

Not great but okay

  • 4 of 5

Rented the house for a family Thanksgiving of 10. The good and the bad: Each bedroom had its own bathroom except for the upstairs (which is described as a bedroom but there's no shower etc.) My sister-in-law had to share a shower and use the downstairs guest bathroom to get ready.

We loved the family room layout. The space was wide open and everyone could lounge comfortably without being on top of one another. Be mindful of the 2 steps going down to the sunken in living room. We had to keep reminding our elderly parents so they wouldn't fall. The view was really quite stunning and everyone commented on how relaxing it made them feel. The kitchen was also nice since we had a large group. The oven space was tricky. We needed 2 large overs but it had one large and a quarter size oven.

The only real negative comments:

1) They need a new TV!! The TV is an old tube style about 30". When you're having a family of 10 come for Thanksgiving and watch football, this was pretty ridiculous considering a large flat screen costs about $500-$600.

2) WIFI is terrible!!!!! I can't emphasize that enough! We had some of our family members who had to work and with the WiFi being so horrible, they couldn't get much of their work done and had to use their hotspots from their phone.

3) They need more adequate lighting outside in the driveway area AND by the outside stairs. Coming and going during the evening was rather tricky. It's a safety issue and needs to be addressed by the owner.

We would have rented the home again for the following Thanksgiving but given these negatives, we opted out and found another home in Santa Fe for 2018.

Reviewer Comments:

We had a remarkable stay at Dorthia Garden. The great room was a perfect gathering spot for the eight of us. Views from all windows are spectacular as it sits atop a hill overlooking the mountains and city of Santa Fe. We were unable to raise and lower blinds in two bedrooms, however. If we returned to Santa Fe we would stay again at Dorthis Garden!

Reviewer Comments:

The house is so poorly maintained that it ruined our visit. The freezer stopped working one day into our visit as did the dishwasher. The maintenance people came to the house and were able to fix the freezer, but the dishwasher never worked properly. The buttons on the control pane were so worn out that they did not engage properly. Also, there were ants in the kitchen which had not been sprayed for prior to our visit so the maintenance people had to do that as well while we were there. The swamp cooler sounded like a jet engine and was so loud you could not hold a normal conversation in the living room. The final straw was that the smoke detectors continued to go off without provocation. This started at 6:00 a.m. while we were all sleeping and continued into the evening hours. Since this occurred on a Saturday and Saturday evening, we had to call the emergency number and have the maintenance person come to the house. He disconnected the detectors which stopped the noise, but by that time our visit had been ruined. In addition to these significant problems, there were other annoyances such as shades in two of the bedrooms not working so that air could not get into the rooms through open windows which in turn meant that the swamp cooler could not work correctly. All in all, it was a very dissatisfactory experience and we would not come back or do business with Kokopelli Property Management again.

Great potential needing a lot attention in many small areas

Reviewer Comments:

This house is in a great location and is perfect for a couple of families. The set up inside is great and spacious. However, there is much unrealized potential and a number of maintenance/amenities problems. There were cobwebs in the doorways, one of the bedrooms was unusable when we arrived, there were ants in the kitchen, the water somehow got turned off, and one of the smoke detector's batteries went, initiating an incessant beeping. The property managers were incredibly responsive in addressing these issues. On the amenities side of things, the bed linens and bath towels could all use updating, there was no patio furniture so we could not enjoy the outside areas, we could not get the main TV working in the living room as the set up is arcane and too complex with no instructions, and we had to reset the router to get the wifi working. This a great house needing a lot of attention in the details to make it worth the per night cost.

We had a great experience at the villa. It was more than what we expected. A great location, very spacious, clean and very well furnished. Overall, the property was very well maintained. We were in the bedroom with canopy bed. A few suggestions: 1) the room lock was not working, 2) the smoke alarm started to chirp when we were leaving - maybe it requires new batteries. 3) The window blinds were great, however, we found difficult to adjust (raise) them. Instructions will help. 3) We could not operate the TV in the leaving room - instructions will help. These suggestions are trivial and meant for future guests.

Reviewer Comments:

We rented the Dorthia Garden home for a ski trip with a total of 5 couples. There are four wonderful bedrooms with very comfy beds and each one has a private bathroom. The fifth bedroom has a mini kitchenette, however, the couple that stayed in that room said the bed was very uncomfortable. They had to share the master bath since it doesn't have its own bathroom. Overall, we loved the home. It was very spacious and was perfect for all 10 of us. The view from the living room is absolutely beautiful. The home is a 5 minute drive from a grocery store and a 10 min drive from the plaza. The ski basin is about 45 min away. We would highly recommend renting this home.
