About Julie Howell
History of the House The great grandparents of the current owners bought four acres with a farmhouse and barn on Allen’s Point with three other Ministers in 1898. (The area was subsequently called Ministers’ Point.) Because he was a minister and always lived in the parish house, his family wanted to own a home of their own. He came to the Cape to allow the local ministers to go on vacation so it worked out well for all concerned. Initially, they would come down by train and be brought to the property by horse and buggy with all their supplies for the summer. The house turned out to have rotten sills, so in 1913 the patriarch and his children built the current house. We have no idea where the plans came from or how he acquired the skills to build it, but it had all the modern conveniences, including a bathroom with tub. A windmill pumped water from the well to supply the needs of the house. The house contains much of the original mission furniture and squirky Victorian pieces. The restoration left some of the unique features. Initially, the house was on stilts because great grandfather did not trust the sea, but after a few years he felt safe enough to put his children to work moving earth. Using wheelbarrows and shovels they built up the land on two sides of the house and filled in the foundations with brick and cement. The house acquired electricity in 1929 and a refrigerator to replace its ice box in the early 1950s. The current owners and our spouses are middling sorts; in education, business, construction and medicine who are connected not only by blood and marriage but by a love of this place where we have spent so many happy summers. We have worked very hard to maintain the house and to bring it gently into the 21st century. We love to share our summer home with others who value family and friends and enjoy the serenity of waves breaking on a gently sloping beach, magnificent sunsets, and star filled skies.
Why Julie Howell chose North Chatham
With its large public spaces, water views from every room and expansive lawns and beaches, the Point House is ideal for gatherings of extended families or old friends. Located at the end of a street, in a quiet neighborhood, walkers find miles of roads with limited traffic and great views to explore and bikers can easily get to Cape bike trail which is found within a mile. Minister's Point is a well known place for bass fishing. Peak seasons are late May and early June and September. The quaint town of Chatham, which is a rigorous, up hill two mile walk distant, has some of the best shopping on the Cape. Chatham is also centrally located on the Cape, so it is perfect jumping off place for exploring the entire peninsula.
