About Michelle Horen
My name is Michelle and I manage this heavenly cottage for and old family friend, Chuck. This cottage is truly a hidden gem and it brings me great joy to be able to help share it with guests. Their gratitude is a constant reminder of how special this place is that we call home.
Michelle Horen purchased this Studio in 1956
Why Michelle Horen chose Hana
Many of our guests return annually. They all say the photos don't do the place justice. Everyone declares the view spectacular. There are 70 acres of government preserve between the cottage and the shore. Even so, when the whales are here (Dec-Apr), you can hear them splash and see them jump. Cattle and a few horses abound in the preserve you can watch their calves frolic. A thoroughly restful place. The serene views and private nature of the cottage offer a sanctuary of kinds for guests.
What makes this Studio unique
Koali Ranch Cottage started out as a vacant lot set aside for a school house. In 1955, the Territory of Hawaii decided that it did not need a school there and auctioned it. Chuck's parents were successful bidders. The Territory insisted that the house be erected within a year. The cottage was designed by local architect John Tatum working with island famous Val Ossipoff.

We loved looking out over the water with cows grazing in the field in front of us. Very Clean and up to date decor. Well stocked with everything needed. Perfect private getaway for two. Great place to stay and explore Hana and surrounding areas. Would highly recommend to others, as we already have.
This place is amazing. We woke up to the sunrise every morning and relaxed on the veranda having our coffee watching the whales. The views of the coast line are amazing. Even though we were on the main road it was very quiet at night. They have done a great job with this studio cottage and it was immaculate. My husband and I feel it is perfectly located between Hana town and the National Park. It was a very relaxing stay in Hana. If we came back to Hana we would chose to stay here.
Great little spot with drool-worthy lanai, cattle and gecko guardians. Right on the road, but as soon as the front door is closed, the only thing you see is ocean. Has everything you need to unwind and explore Hana-side.
Love the “drool-worthy” description! We’re very glad you enjoyed your stay :)
What a sweet little retreat
We had a most wonderful time at this sweet little home. It is simple and pure, old-fashioned in a good way, and appointed beautifully. Nice touches included the incredible spa-worthy shower, the super comfy bed/linens, and the high quality chaise and chairs on the lanai. We spent nearly all our time on the lanai, it was our special place. The view is the best in the islands, hands down. I loved watching the cows moooove past the house, they're so peaceful and fun to watch. We cooked at home most nights, which was nice. This place is a treasure, it's humble and simple so don't come if you want fancy resort vibes. This is old Hawaii, pure peace, enjoyment of nature, and simple pleasures. If that is what you seek, this is the place. 🌺

Jungle Cottage with Stunning Views
We loved our stay in this cottage. What an incredible place to rin in the new year! The views are incredible. It is very peaceful and serene. It has everything you need...plenty of towels, beach supplies, bbq, etc. We loved the location because we broke up the Road to Hana into a few days. If we come back to Maui, we will definitely stay here again, or at least recommend it to friends and family. Mahalo!

Gliding, swim in mountain pools just a 5 minute walk away. 20 minutes away from the Haleakala National Park named for tourists as the Seven Sacred Pools. Most people nap on the lanai and wake up in time to spot the shining telescope dome
atop Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. Then they enjoy the swirling colors as the sun sets. You don't see the sun go into the ocean, but if it rains you can often see rainbows over the ocean).
