About Thomas Byrne
I purchased the Thomas Harrison house in 1991 and restored it over the next few years. The process of research and restoration of this house, built when George Washington was President, greatly increased my interest in historic architecture and the history of St. Michaels. This interest lead to the purchase and restoration of the nearby Washington Melson, Thomas Blades and John Bruff houses (click on link for info on these two bedroom properties).

Why Thomas Byrne chose Saint Michaels
The combination of the waterfront location (with spectacular views of harbor and Miles River), architecture and the historic character of house and the surrounding area, walking distance to shops, restaurants, museums, etc., size of the living space, patio and porch, as well as the people of St. Michaels, make this a very special place.
What makes this House unique
The Harrison house sits prominently on the harbor in St. Michaels with wonderful water views. It is the ONLY large vacation rental house in Town. Walking distance to everything... shops, restaurants, coffee shops, museums, parks, Town pool, tennis courts, library, farmer's market and other attractions. Adjacent cottages can be rented if size of party exceeds 9.

Historic home in incredible location
Stayed here with a group of 8 for my 35th birthday in January. It was tough to find a house that could accommodate 8, was pet friendly, and within my budget. When I booked this house I was nervous that it was too good to be true and assumed there would be issues when we arrived, but it was absolutely perfect! I was mostly worried that it would be on the smaller side or that the bedroom layouts wouldn't work/be comfortable for our group (we had one pregnant guest, one with a boot on his foot due to a recent surgery, some couples and some singles). There are plenty of bedrooms and additional sleeper sofas upstairs and downstairs, so there were more than enough options to suit our needs. The main floor sleeper is in a secluded den with an adjacent bathroom which is perfect for guests who can't make it up the stairs. The attic beds would be great for kids but the stairwell leading up to it is a bit tricky to maneuver. It's great that there are so many other sleeping options - we didn't even use the attic space.
The house itself is much larger than I expected based off the pictures. Some older homes tend to have awkward/small spaces but not this one. We played games in the parlor room, cooked several meals in the kitchen and all fit comfortably in the dining room. The only tip I'd have is that if you plan to cook a lot at the house, bring additional plastic plates, cups, etc for yourselves. They do have dishes (I believe it was a serving for 10 and I think there were 6 coffee mugs) but we didn't want to have to constantly wash dishes so it was just easier to bring extras. The kitchen was otherwise well set up - plenty of pots and pans, utensils, flatware, microwave and coffee maker - everything you'd need.
I can't stress enough how incredible the location is. It's right in the center of town on the water. We walked everywhere we went and had gorgeous views from inside the house. We'll definitely plan to go back when it's warmer out so we can walk to the crab houses on the water!
This is the second time we’ve rented this property for New Years will do it again great location for celebrating the new year
Wonderful Property and Location
Wonderful Property and location. The owner was great to work with and very accommodating. Highly recommend for for a memorable retreat!
great long weekend
had a great time in a cool old house on a nice property, all within walking distance of anything we wanted to see or do in town. no, it's not new construction and as such one should expect some of the charms of an old house, but if that comes as an unpleasant surprise to you for a house dated 1795, well, life is probably chock full of disappointments for you already.
Our stay in St. Michael
The location of this property was perfect.
We were able to walk to so many activities, restaurants and shops. We enjoyed sitting on benches in the park, next to the house, looking at the water and boats. We had a wonderful time.
Wonderful historic house in the best part of Saint Michaels
When I travel for business I stay at Marriott and fly Southwest. Why? Because I want a commodity product that is the same from town to town. When I travel for vacation and renewal, I want interesting, historic and different. This house meets all these criteria and more. There is so much history, antiques, books and other artifacts that you could spend an entire afternoon just looking at everything.
The house is situated in the most beautiful part of town with wonderful water views and walkable to everything. We were a part of 4 with two guests from the U.K . The U.K. guests loved the history of the British in this town and we had many conversations about the War of 1812 while sitting in the wonderfully appointed living room. We docked our boat a Chesapeake Bay Museum for an easy 5-minute walk to the house.
As far as he accommodations, I did read some prior posts about beds being not comfortable, but I’m 6’3 and did not have an issue. We had several nice meals in the house and loved sitting on the patio rocking chairs
The owner Tom is wonderful to deal with. He let us know about all the restaurants in town and even sent us information on a Shakespeare in the Park performance that was right across from us.
This house is a part of American History that is not to be missed. The only word of advice is to make sure you get the floor plan, so you understand the layout of the house and bedroom /bathrooms arrangement. It took us a little while to realize the third master bedroom was up a different staircase.
With that said, we enjoyed our stay immensely and loved everything this house has to offer. Saint Michaels is a wonderful town and this house will provide you with an interesting and historic vacation.
