About this property

Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island

Step back in time to a more leisurely age and holiday in a historic Rangitoto bach. Book to stay overnight on Auckland’s iconic volcanic island.

Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay near the Islington Bay wharf, and Motutapu Island. The bach is a 1 and a ½ hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf or a 2 and a ½ hour kayak from Auckland.

Since the 1920s the baches on Rangitoto have been available to only a few lucky families but now you can join them. Bach 78 has been lovingly restored with the addition of modern bedding, cooking, gas heater and toilet facilities. Supplied in the kitchen to use are utensils, pots, pans and a 12 volt chilly bin to keep your food cool.

Bach 78 is located directly opposite the Islington Bay Wharf on Rangitoto Island. It has 2 bedrooms, gas cooker, BBQ, solar powered lights and a chemical toilet.

There is a network of well-defined walking tracks giving access to the volcanic features of Rangitoto and the native bush restoration and archaeological sites on Motutapu. The views from the summit of Rangitoto is a must do feature of time spent on the island. Both islands are pest free and you will see native birds and other native wildlife often absent on the mainland.

While the rocky shoreline of Rangitoto can make swimming difficult the sandy beaches of Motutapu are just a short walk away.

Getting there;
Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay on Rangitototo Island. Access to Rangitoto wharf is available from Fullers360 Ferry (https://www.fullers.co.nz/timetables-and-fares), Auckland Sea Shuttle (0508 SEA SHUTTLE), or private boat. Special conditions:

Small animals, ants, rainbow skinks and weeds or exotic seeds are the biggest threats to the pest-free status of our special islands. Gear that has been in the garage or even stored in the house could be hiding rodents, skinks, insects and seeds. Please help by completing the DOC Biosecurity checklist prior to your arrive on the island.

Extras:

Cleaning (Optional, $100.00 cash per booking). Please arrange this service directly with the Island Bach Manager. NOTE: If there are back-to-back bookings, in more than one bach, it may not be possible for the Island Host to offer this service. An Amazing One-Night Getaway
We had such an incredible time staying at this bach. The location is nice and quiet, close to a fantastic snorkel spot, Motutapu island, and the beautiful coastal track. I would have spent a whole week there if I could! Quincy and Stephanie were fantastic, lovely, and helpful hosts. One of the coolest places I've ever stayed.

Loved our stay here - such a beautiful place. Hope to stay again in the future. (For those with young children be aware that the upper bunks don't have rails.)

Magic experience in Islington Bay
The history and remote location is what makes this stay most special. Set in picturesque Islington Bay, once the tourists go for the day you literally have the bay all to yourself. Star gazing, board games, camp dinners and general chill time is what this is all about after a big day exploring the island. Photos are as listed. Be aware if you have small kids you need to go across the bay to use the public toilets.
