About Susan Crakow
I was a single woman for 12 years with two wonderful grown children, until I met the man of my dreams, Greg, who dramatically proposed to me on my terrace in Italy. We live most of the year in Manhattan, and stay at Podere Vigliano when we can. I recently retired from a 34 year career as a Dental Hygienist and enjoy giving back by going to remote areas of the world on Medical/Dental Missions with Flying Doctors of America. I love travel, food, wine, good company and Italy. It gives me much pleasure to share this magical land with people and take small groups on tour around my area.
Susan Crakow purchased this Farmhouse in 2000
Why Susan Crakow chose Monteleone D'orvieto
Fifteen years ago I took my first trip to Italy and fell in love with the land, culture and most of all the people. I made some Italian friends and decided to come back and look for property. Staying with them, I found my farmhouse nearby. I never intended to rent it out but found that a house needs to be lived in and started sharing it with others. It has been such a reward to help guests experience the joys of Italy. I am selective of who I let stay at my property. They must have an adventurous, joyful spirit.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Staying at Podere Vigliano allows you to experience the authentic life of an Umbrian. You look up to the medieval hill town of Monteleone d'Orvieto from the terrace and hear the church bells ring every 15 minutes. It is a short walk up the hill to the town who's focus remains for the locals, few tourists here. My neighbors are still farming as they have for many generations and you will hear very little English spoken here. This is the real Umbrian/Tuscan countryside experience. You can't help but live according to the pace of the Italian countryside.

Lovely and restful
My friend and I recently completed a week at Podere Vigliano. Everything was wonderful, especially the pool during an especially hot week. We found Susan's house and excursion books to be very helpful and followed the suggestions for, three excursions, we also had Milena come to cook for us one night, which was spectacular and included a birthday cake, complete with candles, because I mentioned to Susan in an email that this trip was for both of our 60th birthdays. The house is well stocked and roomy, with lots of nooks and crannies for privacy. It would be wonderful for larger groups, although we luxuriated in all the space. The grounds are beautiful, and, even though the property is right next to the road to Moneleone d'Orvieto, provide a sense of serenity and quiet. We lived it and would return I a heartbeat!
A "wonderful spot on planet Earth"
I spent a week at the Villa with my wife, 2 children (15 and 19) as well as my parents. My father summed the experience at the villa by saying "this is a wonderful spot on planet Earth".
I like to think we have quite discerning taste and I can absolutely say that the villa was fantastic. The property was lovely and the house was equally so. Susan was incredibly helpful and responsive to any question we had. The villa itself was stocked with many helpful items that you don't think alot about until you need them (and you always need them).
There are a number of great day trips/hilltop towns/top quality restaurants nearby that allow for a nice outing/excellent meal and then plenty of time back at the villa to relax and take in the Tuscan sun (not to mention time at the pool).
We had a diverse group with age ranges 15 - 72 years old and Susan's villa and approach worked for everyone.
Thanks so much Susan.
Dear Susan - Our group of six adults had a fantastic week at the villa. It was the vacation of a lifetime. We enjoyed the wonderful Umbrian countryside, local towns and made day trips to many local sights. The Seven Cafe in nearby Monteleone was a real highlight. They introduced us to the Tenuta Carini vineyard where we got a super wine tasting. Thanks for setting up the visiting chefs, too. They prepared some delicious meals.
Our hearts are in Podere Vigliano
I nostri cuori sono nel Podere Vigliano per sempre. Grazie Sue per il privilegio.
I know you've heard from the other girls already, but I just want to echo their sentiments. The villa was absolutely beautiful and it made our vacation the trip of a lifetime. We are so happy we made the choice to stay there. With having a car and easy access to the train station we were able to see so much of Italy and we weren't limited to the big cities. We loved seeing the small towns and the true Italian culture. We will highly recommend Podere Vigliano to anyone who may be traveling to Italy. Thanks again.
Heaven on earth!!
This is a little piece of heaven on earth! I did not want to leave! One of the best vacations of my life. The peacefulness and positive energy here is unbelievable! Susan is so attentive to every detail and works so hard to make everything perfect! This home is truly a magical place!!
Podere Vigliano is a 275 year old farmhouse beautifully restored in the old style. It lies on 10 acres in the heart of Italy on the border of Umbria and Tuscany. Ideally located midway between Florence and Rome it is easy to visit the famous hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria and return home to the countryside to relax or take a swim in the pool. The A-1 autostrada and the main train station in Chiusi are close by for easy access.
The farmhouse looks up to the medieval hill town of Monteleone d' Orvieto which hosts several well known festivals. We are walking distance to town with several great restaurants, bars, wine bar, forno, and grocery stores.
Orvieto, Siena, Assisi, Perugia, Todi, Deruta, Montepulciano, and Cortona are all within an hour's drive. Etruscan tombs, hot springs, Roman ruins and the Duomo of Orvieto are just a few of the regions historical features. Local activities include horseback riding, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, cycling, cooking and art classes.
Other Activities: shopping, boating, Health/Beauty Spa
