About Robert Henrikson
Over the past eight years I have been the steward of these remarkable botanical gardens in Hana Maui. For over 30 years I have been a serial green business entrepreneur, developing innovative companies growing algae for green food supplements in 30 countries and building beautiful bamboo homes in the Hawaiian Islands. I also own with my brothers a 150 acre farm and forest near Olympia Washington. I am a documentary filmmaker, and have produced a series of dvds.
Robert Henrikson purchased this House in 2001
Why Robert Henrikson chose Hana
I fell in love with this beautifully planted botanical garden in Hana. Over 40 years ago the original owner planted 100 kinds of palm trees from seeds collected from all over the world, calling it a love garden. Over the years, many exotic ornamental trees and tropical fruit trees were planted all over the property. Now lawns and pathways weave through these magical gardens.
What makes this House unique
Staying here is great for a couple or small family. It has generous space for multiple families for gatherings and reunions. Retreat groups come and stay for a week. Hana Gardenland is a perfect model for eco-tourism, where guests and visitors can roam the botanical gardens and learn about plants thriving in the Hana Maui ecosystem, enjoying tropical fruit in season along the way.

Great stay in Hana!
We loved staying in this house. It’s very rustic and would not be for those who want fancy accommodations, but it worked out great for our group of eight. The location is absolutely perfect.
Camping in the Rainforest
Buggy is an understatement. This was just a step from camping in a tent. Disappointed in the cleanliness of the house. Evidence of rodents in the house and there were small ants everywhere. Tried contacting property manager and was told they would come out and address the issue. Nothing was done. Only a couple pans and food stuck to them, so unable to use them. The towels seemed like they've had them for 10 years. Overall disappointed.
Heavy rainy period around this time brought ants inside unfortunately. Guest may have mistaken gecko droppings for rodents. Housekeeper took a set of pots and pans for deep cleaning and did not return them in time. We were short housekeeping staff over the Christmas holidays and guest issues were not addressed before they left early. Apologized to guest and issued refund.
Felt JUST Like HOME ^_^
Thank you Robert for your housing. My family & I have enjoyed every bit of it. Them mosquitos were no joke though & I completely understand with it being right in the middle of BEAUTIFUL greenery! LOL. Other than that, what a peaceful & serene property. Mahalo nui loa once again!
Rainy days in Hana
We had a wonderful time in Hana. The house is rustic but the upstairs is very inviting and cool in the heat. Many insects! Might need to redo a few screens:)
This is a unique property on the island of Maui. Hana is far more residential than commercial, and this house is consistent with that.
The house is split into two residences - upper floor and lower floor.
Both have full kitchens, but in Hawaii, space is limited. The rooms with twin beds can be transformed into a king bed with a nicely-padded belt system that plugs up the gap between beds.
The landscaping of the uniquely large yard is stunning. Plants/trees are labeled for identification purposes. You will hear numerous birds in the otherwise quiet tropical morning’s, and probably will see multiple mongooses. (Mongeese?)
There are local fruit and coffee stands nearby within walking distance, which probably would have been interesting had they actually been open like their signs said they were. But in the morning, the traffic is very light, and finding interesting places to walk (or jog) is easy.
There are bugs.
Mosquitoes and cockroaches are normal, and must be included in your plan. I had deet repellent; my wife had some natural whatchacallit lotion that promised a lot, but failed to deliver.
Red and black sand beaches in the area, and Hanggliding (ultralight) at nearby areas are terrific, as are the food trucks in Hana.
This is not a resort feel; rather a home-grown appeal.
Nice location on the edge of Hana near coffee/fruit stands. The grounds are beautiful with trees, fruits, & flowers. It is a rain forest so expect bugs, spiders, & geckos. Had an issue with water pressure in one of the showers, contacted Robert & he was there quickly to fix the issue. Plenty of fans to stay cool & sleep comfortably. We had a party of 9 & the house accommodated us easily. Great communication by Robert the manager!
