About this property

Spectacular oceanfront on the cliffs of Cape Breton with a private beach

The Sailor`s Rest House is located on an island on the island of Cape Breton in the east of the island of Nova Scotia, more precisely on the charming, Franco-Canadian Isle Madame in eastern Canada. Halifax International Airport is easy e.g. B. from Frankfurt in 6-7 hours direct flight several times a week. (The property is listed here twice, the rental price varies due to the exchange rate on the Canadian portal)
Originally built by the first settlers in the mid-eighteenth century, the Sailor`s Rest house has recently been fully renovated and now offers a comfortable, bright ambience with great attention to detail. Furniture made of driftwood complements the new IKEA furniture for European requirements, e.g. B. the large 1.90 mx 2 m pull-out bed in the bedroom with high-quality Visco mattresses made of memory foam (Tempur). Modern, environmentally conscious heat pumps, air conditioning technology, 220V sockets and more. give an immediate sense of wellbeing at home in one of the most exposed, wildest places in Canada. The house has 3 bedrooms, whereby we lock our personal things in one room, because there may be a comfortable pull-out bed and an Ikea sofa in the living room.
The name Sailor's Rest comes from the fact that we sailed here across the Atlantic in 2012/13 and feel so comfortable here that we stayed and immigrated.

Retreat time we all need
Bob is an amazing host, very helpful and well informed about the neighborhoods. The Captain’ s Rest is a quiet, peaceful, clean place surrounded by beautiful vegetation and water. Truly enjoyed our 3-day stay! Mary & Greg

Magic in the Acadian Lands
If you like to look seaward and listen to the gulls and water slapping on the rocks, this is for you. A renovated cabin tucked into a small rocky cove with a deck and big window looking out over the Atlantic. Friendly hosts and neighbours. Lots of places to walk and kayak. Plenty of rural scenery on small winding roads. A good coffee shop, several places to eat, a bakery and grocery store not far away.

not what we expected and a safety concern
First, the positives. The unit was very clean and well stocked with everything you need. Bob clearly wants his guests to enjoy nature and was very responsive to my questions. However, we were disappointed. The place is not nearly as secluded as it looks in the listing. We had the impression from the listing and the video that we would see/hear waves, but when we arrived, the sea was very calm with just ripples. The next morning it was the same. Bob is a sailor and explained that waves are dependent on the wind. We are city people and the lake near us always has waves when we go to the waterfront, so I assumed that we could expect waves, and I would expect that at some point in the week, there would be. But a couple other things that were not disclosed in the listing convinced us to leave after just one night (we booked and paid for 7 nights). The ceiling by the stairway is very low and I hit my head very hard when going upstairs. Since the bathroom is on the 1st floor and the bedroom is on the 2nd floor, the thought of getting up a couple times every night and trying to remember to duck going up and down the stairs was not pleasant. Also, the doorways are low so I had to crouch down when moving through the unit. We decided that we just could not stay there. Also, the house rules that I received a few days before our stay are not in the listing. Had I known that guests are not supposed to flush toilet paper and are expected to put used tp in a bag and take the bag out to the trash, we might have had second thoughts. We ended up staying elsewhere.

Paysage incroyable

We came across the Atlantic and immigrated in 2012 to enjoy sailing on our 70-square-meter sailing catamaran with our guests on a modern 12-meter (38`) catamaran. We love to explore the numerous dreamy bays, swim and get our dinner ourselves, fishing mackerels and collecting mussels.
After living aboard for a few years we make a rest and renovated our private Sailor`s Rest House with lots of love.

Why they chose this property

„Sailor’s Rest is a one-of-a-kind piece of paradise on the open ocean in Nova Scotia fulfills your dream. The house is mere feet from the ocean, with uninterrupted views of the ocean, the cove and marine wildlife. It is a well-furnished and comfortable house with an excellent king-sized bed (the only house with one on the ocean in Nova Scotia/Cape Breton that you could find!). It is great to have a fully functional and stocked kitchen to cook in, along with a brand-new washer and dryer for laundry mid-trip. Spent hours on the front porch watching the ocean, reading and relaxing under the handy outdoor umbrella. When the weather didn’t permit this, you are able to cosy up on the huge couch to watch the storms through the big front window, which is just as lovely.
