About this property

Eco-friendly Beachfront House on stunning beach with private cabana

Casuarina Bay is an exceptionally beautiful, secluded eco-friendly beachfront home on the island of Eleuthera, in the Bahamas.

Just two houses share this very private bay on the Atlantic, skirted by miles of pink sand beaches.

Easily accessible, Casuarina Bay is just 1 hour by air from Miami, and only seven miles from Governors Harbour airport. It's located 1.5 miles northeast of the lovely village of Governors Harbour, one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas.

The house was designed to take in the extraordinary views and off-shore breezes of the Atlantic Ocean from every room as well as the virgin land and spectacular sunsets to the west.
It nestles amidst picturesque groves of Coconut Palms, Papaya, Sea Grape, Sea Apple and Casuarina trees. The fragrant frangipani waft their intoxicating aroma while the hibiscus bloom fresh flowers each morning.
The property is also blessed with other exotic plants such as poinciana, sour orange, surinam cherry, soursop, sapodilla, and passion fruit.

Ocean-lovers will find some of the best snorkeling, scuba diving and swimming in the world. Underwater visibility is up to 100 feet, with water temperatures ranging between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's hard to find a more beautiful sea anywhere in the world. Sit back and delight in the changing colors of the sea and sky. Or jump in and watch the magic below the surface.
There's a barrier reef just offshore so Casuarina Bay Beachfront House has protected waters and no rip currents. It's excellent swimming for all ages.

For more information and many more photographs, please visit the link at the bottom of the page.

The adventurous traveler can explore nearby islands and virgin coral reefs, swim with dolphins or exotic tropical fish, or charter boats for world-class bone or deep-sea fishing.

Other sports available on the island include sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, spearfishing, tennis, and surfing.

The rustic Beachfront House was designed and built to savor the incredible natural unspoiled beauty of Eleuthera. It's only 20 yards from its own pink-sand beach, so wherever you are in the house you have breathtaking views in all directions. To the east, you see the turquoise ocean and glistening beach. Looking to the west your eyes rest on untouched green hills and colorful Caribbean sunsets. At night the brilliance of the stars and moon are unforgettable.

This romantic wooden house sleeps up to 6, with 3 bedrooms (1 king, 1queen and one with twin beds that can be made into a king- also with A/C), 2 bathrooms, living and dining room, kitchen, decks on 3 sides (with 2 tables for al fresco dining). One of the bedrooms has air conditioning. The other two bedrooms and the living areas and kitchen do not have air conditioning, but instead, they have large doors/windows to capture the ocean breezes and fans.

There are 2 additional apartments (which sleep 2 guests each) underneath the deck on the ground level of the Beachfront house. These spaces can be rented along with the beachfront house to add a 4th and 5th bedroom and room for 10 people, including 2 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, and living space.s Alternatively, these spaces may be rented to other guests. These apartments have their own private entrances and do not share deck space with the Beachfront house so are private from each other.

Relax on our private beach in the thatched cabana, with a freshwater shower.

This is a perfect location for the adventurous traveler looking to enjoy the natural beauty of this magical island.

Amenities: Free wireless Internet, large fridge, high powered gas stove, dishwasher, coffeemaker, blender, toaster, barbecue, washer and dryer, kayaks, beach cabana with outdoor shower.

Wake up to an experience of Nature you may never have had before:
- the sound of the ocean kissing the shore.
- wind rustling through the coconut palms.
- a swim in the inviting sea before breakfast
- coffee in the cabana
- wine or pina colada on the beach as you watch the moonrise
- curly tail lizards wondering if you'll share your mango with them
- emerald green parrotfish which you can see as you walk along the beach
- moonrise from your bed
- moonset from your bed
- a deep experience of tranquility and calmness

Activities: Spend days exploring deserted pink sand beaches, kayaking along the coast or snorkeling or diving exquisite reefs just in front of the house from our ocean kayaks.
Excellent fishing- deep sea (for tuna, mahi mahi, kingfish etc.), bone-fishing, bottom fishing, line-fishing or spearfishing.

Do you want to really experience Eleuthera?
Look, there are probably a lot of places to stay in Eleuthera. You can sterilize it, pretend you are in the US. But that is not what you should go to Eleuthera for. This home is the real deal. It is made to take in the breezes and the sounds of the sea, right down to the small conch shells that serve as cabinetry handles. There is a lot of history in this place, and it is laid before you in the quasi-library that is the main part of the home. If you have children (ours are ages 5 and 7), they will absolutely love all there is to absorb here. Let go of your conceptions of what a luxury vacation should be, and stay in this place. Bring a snorkel+fins, be brave and start swimming 50 feet right in front of the house, and follow a trail of towering coral pillars teeming with life. Doon, the owner, is a local celebrity that lives closeby, and she knows what's up. You won't regret your stay here.

Tranquil Beauty!!!
Absolutely fabulous vacation! Please note that our intent was a relaxed family time alone but convenient to our needs for meals or adventure if we cared to venture out. I love staying at a Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton or the like... but thats not what we wanted here. If those places are feature films, our stay was a song or poem... different and unique but so wonderful in many respects. The home was hand built by the owner who has lived on the property since 1975. The home is decorated from an accumulation of generations of furniture, libraries, and art over the years creating a collection of the family that loves they're home. The views are astonishing from every room. Not all the bedrooms are airconditioned. Now that might scare away some, but I will tell you the multidirectional breezes and fan in each bedroom made for incredible sleep... we were all always comfortable waking very rested. Given all the activities and sun, most times we all fell asleep around 9 pm and were awake for the sunrise. The wrap around elevated patio is spacious and affords great lounging. The homeowner Doon is a fascinating person and very gracious host. She was onsite in a small home a little down the beach and always available for a question. We all found her so attentive and interesting as a long resident of Eleuthera. The beach at the home and both adjoining beaches were beautiful and we had them virtually to ourselves. There were so many things to inspire our time on the beach and the property that we only ventured away one day in 7... for 13, 16, and 19 year-old's, that says a great deal about the opportunities... snorkeling, skim boarding, kayaking etc.. The kids saw loads of fish, swam with a turtle and very close to a friendly dolphin. We cooked several times on the property and you'll find convenient grocery options a short 3-5 minute drive away. Everything necessary to cook or barbecue were there and we shared great meals. We did venture out and really must give high recommendations to The Buccaneer and LaBouganvilla. The meal at the 1648 Restaurant was exceptional but our decision to eat at 6pm on the balcony made for a really uncomfortable experience given the heat... we stayed in July just after the Bahamas opened from COVID19 and inside dining was not permitted. In closing... all of us unanimously loved our experience, would return in a heartbeat, and accomplished exactly what we set out for... great family time, unique adventures, & a recharged spirit!

On the beach? This is it.
If you dream of going to sleep with the sound of the waves in your ears, and waking up with the sound of waves in your ears, this is ideal. It’s a little rustic, but you can’t go to sleep and wake up that way in a fancy condo.

comfy house that is close to the beach and to town
We loved the location: very easy beach access and only a ten minute drive to town for supplies. We were a party of six, four adults and two children and the house worked perfectly for us. The cabana and shower right on the beach was ideal! The large deck around the house became a wonderful outdoor, additional room. We couldn't have been happier.

About the host

The McKinney family has lived in The Bahamas for generations. At 17 Doon was teaching school in a remote village in Botswana. She fell in love with the idea of living in a Round House. When she returned to The Bahamas she decided to move from Nassau to the remote and untouched island of Eleuthera and build her own round house. Everyone was a bit skeptical of this young woman clearing the land by herself and building a house with no electricity, running water, car or a telephone.

Camping out every night on the site helped her develop an intense connection with the land and gave her the opportunity to build a house that was perfect for the location. She decided to build 11-foot arches on all five sides of the house to allow the ocean breeze to sweep into the house. She nestled the house among coconut trees and Casuarina trees where you can hear the sound of the wind in the trees and the waves on the beach. She surrounded the house with a garden full of beautiful hibiscus, oleander, seagrape, coconuts and, other native flowers and trees.

It was a challenge for a woman with limited carpentry skills to clear the land and almost single-handedly build a house- having never built so much as a box. Doon persevered and used creativity to overcome many of the obstacles she encountered. While still working on the building of the house Doon married and had 2 daughters (Casuarina and Taja)- the youngest was born right in the Round House before the midwife even found her way out to the house.
