The house was nicely decorated and was stocked with everything you needed.. Mary, the owner, was very cordial. Met us and explained all of the ins and outs of the place. Being seniors we had our first experience using kayaks. We enjoyed them so much we were out on the lake 3x a day using them. We would definitely go back some other time in the future.
Fantastic getaway as usual!
This was our 3rd stay at Mary’s property and won’t be our last. I love everything about this home. It’s very comfortable, everything you need onsite, peaceful and a wonderful place to forget everything negative going on in the world. Big thanks to Mary for making our experience so great during each stay.
Much needed respite
With everything going on right now this is just what me and my 17 year old daughter needed. The property was even better than expected and Mary was a doll to deal with. Our dogs loved the massive enclosed yard and lake. The hummingbirds were simply adorable and I enjoyed my morning coffee out in the enclosed porch on the swing bed. The nature sounds were a pleasure and the kayaks were a lot of fun. We fished off the dock and appreciated the privacy as there are just a few other houses by the lake. The house was exceptionally clean and lovely. Will definitely be back! Thanks Mary!!
Thank you so much for your kind words here, and in the Guest Book! It is a treat to read the Guest Book, and your entry really makes me love sharing the cottage with others. I am so happy that you were able to spend it with your daughter and reward her with a well earned vacay at the cottage and to be able to enjoy peace at a time where not many can have an experience anything near what the two of you were able to enjoy. I look forward to having you back at the cottage again! My best, Mary
Perfect social distancing getaway
We had a wonderful at Mary’s lake home. The cottage itself is neat and has everything you need to cook and feel at home. The lake is just wonderful. My husband, two boys and I loved fishing off the dock (a 9 lb Bass was caught! As well many more) and floating on the lake in a raft. Mary also made 3 kayaks, a pedal boat and a Jon boat available to us- which were all great for tooling around the lake. The lake is peaceful and not highly used. The area is great for biking and if you want more-the entrance to the Gainesville-Hawthorne Bike trail is a short car ride away. There’s also a fire pit on the property that we made good use of most nights- making s’mores and talking under the stars. The front yard was big enough that we had family baseball games.
We had small requests and questions to which Mary responded immediately and efficiently. No issues whatsoever. One thing to know- This place takes you off the grid, so don’t expect fast internet or Netflix, etc. We needed to work a bit out there and Mary upgraded the internet to the highest available but it is satellite- so we could still email and do simple things but not so great if you have zoom meetings- This forced us to really relax and enjoy time away from screens.
It was my pleasure to have you and your family at the cottage for several weeks! I could truly see the excitement of your family in even the small comments that you made about the surroundings and knew how appreciative you were to be there and experience the natural surroundings. Thank you for expressing it here so that I know what makes people's visits to the cottage a quality experience! As far as the internet, like you said it is doable for emails and such. For future guests, I am trying to get ATT Fixed Wireless which will give a much better internet experience including a large amount of GB's at a lower cost for me. It's just not yet available there, but is elsewhere in the neighborhood.... so hopefully soon. I hope to see you again in the future! Many thanks! Mary
My husband I stayed a weekend and it was wonderful. Only problem is it wasn't long enough. This is exactly what we were looking for. We had a great day out on the dock fishing and swimming all day. Love the screened in porch and nice comfy bed. The house is equipped with all of your needs. Most of all Mary made us feel right at home .Can't wait to get back for another wonderful weekend !!!! Oh and we had deer visit us !!!
Wildlife is abundant in this heavily wooded community. Bird watching is another exciting activity. Wild Turkeys, Sand Hill Cranes, Blue Herons, Eagles, Hawks, Ospreys, and Swallow-Tailed Kites are seen regularly around the lake.
Stargazing and satellite spotting at night with the naked eye is a wonderful activity enjoyed by many, being far away from city lights. The stars are so vibrant in the night sky. (Some people have the Google Sky app on their Android/IPhone phones/tablets which identify the stars...just point it towards the sky....) Enjoy a campfire and roast marshmallows.
A canoe, jon boat with paddles, and a peddle boat are available for your use at no charge. A very nice bike trail can be found in Hawthorne and is part of the 'Rails to Trails'. The paved path goes all the way to Gainesville. There are several places to stop for rest or a picnic on the trail. There are a few used bikes at the cottage for your use (please inquire when you make your reservation if you'd like to use them, for use around the lake only)
I would like to highlight a true jewel of this part of the earth, which is, North Central Florida, known for it’s beautiful natural springs. Spring water is a natural discharge from the ‘Floridan aquifer system’, the state's primary aquifer. The water temp is 72 degrees year round, which makes swimming on a warm winter Florida day very nice, not to mention on hot days. Three of my favorite springs are Silver Glen Springs and Salt Springs in the Ocala National Forest, and Ichetucknee Springs near High Springs/Ft White area, north of Gainesville. Tubing down the Ichetucknee River is a favorite for so many. It generally takes several hours, but be sure to look at the websites to get info as the number of people that can tube down is limited (you may visit the north or south end). If visiting there on the weekend in summer months, be sure to get there VERY EARLY as they generally max out and reach capacity number of people they allow each day, in order to preserve the spring and "human footprint". There are rentals in that area for tubes etc. Visiting these State Park springs on weekdays, will be less crowded, but be sure to call for hours etc. before visiting and check pet policies.
Saint Augustine has a full day of activities to offer and is located approx 1 1/4 hours from the cottage. Spend some time at the beach, The Old Fort, and the many shops and restaurants on St. George’s Street. There is a winery in the area, as well as the Alligator Farm along with ziplines and other activities. Ride the trolley around St. Augustine, or take a day trip on the many different options to get out on the water.
Orlando theme parks are south of the cottage, approx 2 hours away.
I keep brochures and other information at the cottage with information on many other things to do in the surrounding areas.
I am married, and retired from the University of Florida. I enjoy traveling, and would like to offer my guests the amenities in rental homes that I have enjoyed over the years in my travels, primarily snow skiing, and boating. I love the water and boating, and have spent my adult life on a lake close-by to the cottage. I love animals, and currently have only birds (umbrella cockatoo, cockatiels, sun conure, & zebra finches). I enjoy meeting and talking to people, and try to offer my guests the best possible experience at the cottage.
Why Mary chose Hawthorne
We purchased the 1.7 acres on this beautiful lake and built the cottage. The lake is crystal clear water and one of the top pristine lakes in Florida. I enjoy the gentle breezes that blow across the property and up to the patio. It is peaceful, tranquil, and secluded with lots of wildlife and birds. A very nice place to slow down and unwind.
What makes this Cottage unique
The property is secluded and quiet. Most of my guest have commented on how quiet the area is with no traffic, which is a unique commodity not found in many parts of FL. The cottage is very well appointed, decorated and very clean. A nice place to 'get away from it all'. Swimming, kayaking and canoeing, or fishing is such a delight in the beautiful pristine water. You can see the fish swimming around the dock! Stargazing/meteor showers, full moon nights, campfires, or sitting on the dock provides great fun. The cottage sits far away from the city and its' lights... and noise. You may see one or 2 cars pass by in a days' time, if you happen to be looking!
