A piece of heaven!
It was my first time using Home Away, the property that we rented at Kate’s was as good as it gets. The apartment was very clean and updated with modern touches throughout, all you needed to bring is your clothes as everything else was already there, from bed linens, towels (including beach), coffee, sugar, spices, water in the refrigerator, dish washing liquid, dish towels, utensils, pots and pans, grader, detergent, dryer sheets etc. There was also a big selection of kitchen gadgets like keurig coffe maker, electric kettle, toaster, microvawe, regular coffee maker, big refrigerator as well as washer, dryer, iron with ironing board. The apartment included satellite tv as well as a land line for incoming/local calls. The house had majestic views of the Atlancic Ocean as well as the island, situated on a quiet street off the road with a beautiful little beach on an unpaved road about a 10 minute drive from the house. It was nice to have a glass of wine with Kate as she told us all about the Port Hood area and beyond. We will definitely come back next year and re-visit the beautiful Port Hood area.
Our family of 4 had a wonderful stay at the Marble Hill Oasis! The view is spectacular, the accommodations were cozy and well equipped and our hostess, Kate, went well out of her way to support us during our stay. Port Hood is peaceful, the people are open and friendly and the many sandy beaches are beautiful. Marble Hill is a great starting point for all of the adventures we had on Cape Breton Island including driving the Cabot Trail, visiting Sydney and Glace Bay, watching live music in Mabou and making our way to many of the glorious sea look outs. Kate was able to arrange for us to purchase fresh lobster, cooked by the co-op, for us to enjoy as we watched the sunset at our apartment. I would recommend visitors rent a 4x4 vehicle as most of the best venues and vantage points are tucked away at the end of trails and dirt roads.
This place books up fast and there are very good reasons why! We look forward to visiting Kate and Port Hood again as soon as we can. Thank-you Kate!
Fantastic Vantage Point!
We had a great stay and found the apartment clean and comfortable and well equipped. The views from the hillside were awesome watching the ocean change under the sun, cloud and the breeze. Our hike down to the shore and along the trail led us to Muphy's Pond. We saw a freshly caught Tuna arrive on one of the fisherman's boats. We took part in a square dance at West Mabou just a short drive up Rte. 19 and enjoyed live music at the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre at Judique.
The accommodation was great. It was a beautiful relaxing home away from home.
It was a very relaxing place and because of the time of year we didn’t take advantage of all the extras that were available to us. Everything was clean and the entire place felt homey. The only thing that needed upgrade was the mattress. It was too soft and the springs were extremely squeaky. A problem easily fixed.
Great View - Private - Clean and Relaxing
Our first time to Cape Breton Island and we had a wonderful experience. Location was very private and had a beautiful view of the ocean.
Kate is a wonderful host. She is very welcoming and accommodating and made sure we had everything that we needed. She respected our privacy, but offered to be available by email or phone anytime during our stay. She was very prompt at getting back to us, and gave us ideas of places to visit and a little historical background.
The apartment was very clean, cozy and well equipped. The bed in bedroom #2 was too soft (a personal preference) for two people to sleep in.

We had awesome stay on Marble Hill. The view is outstanding.
Kate was a wonderful host. She was just text away .She provided everything that you would need for relaxing vacation. The kitchen was very well stocked if you are inclined to cook.
The unit was a short drive to the beach, church, grocery store or restaurants.
All the makings of fabulous vacation.
We do hope to return again.
The local area has breathtaking scenery along the western coastline of Cape Breton island and is very rich in Celtic culture. It is a pristine coastline with many golden sandy beaches nearby and noted to have some of the warmest waters north of the Carolinas. The distance to the nearest sandy beach with lifeguard supervision is 0.5 mile by car or 15-20 minutes along a coastline hiking path. Beautiful Port Hood island is an extension of the community located just a mile offshore.
Route 19 along western Cape Breton island is also the Ceilidh Trail and is known for world renowned music and Scottish heritage. The Red Shoe Pub, owned by some of the infamous Rankin family is a must for live entertainment. The Glen Breton Distillery, North America’s 1st single malt whisky is nearby. It is 24 miles from the Cabot Links, a new world class golf course. Enjoy the adventure of hiking trails at Cape Mabou Highlands with beautiful vistas over the Gulf of St. Lawrence/Atlantic Ocean.Enjoy biking, hiking or running on a 1st class trail,Celtic Shores.Take a beautiful scenic drive along the many destinations of the Ceilidh Trail or a day trip around the world famous Cabot Trail.
Treat your senses…the views, the music, the saltwater air, the seafood fresh from the ocean daily…and so much more!
