About this property

Steps From the Sand Charming Beach Front Cottage Located on Makaha Surfing Beach

The front yard is steps away from one of the world’s most beautiful sandy beaches. There is great snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding right in front of the cottage, depending on the swell, of coarse. Surfers can paddle out to the break from the front yard. This is also a perfect place to relax and just enjoy the ocean views. Besides other great views there are SPECTACULAR sunsets just about every evening. There are also early morning “full moon sets”, and occasional rainbows out over the ocean. (Makaha is on the dry side of the island). Watch dolphins, sea turtles and spouting whales from the front yard. This is truly a gorgeous one-of-a kind place!

The attached cottage is clean with off-white tile throughout. There are two queen beds; one in the main studio and another in a screened porch sitting/sleeping room. Visitors can hear the ocean lapping on the sand from both rooms. A bathroom with a shower/bath tub connects the rooms from a patio. The street-side patio is very private and screened in. The second patio faces the shared front yard and ocean. There are tables and chairs on both patios as well as in the main studio. There is also a gas barbeque on the ocean side patio. Street side patio is covered.

The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and pans. There is a large refrigerator, a two burner propane gas stove, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee grinder and coffee maker. Everything one needs, but not fancy. If you want hotel-style air conditioning, fresh towels and linens everyday, and your bed turned down the cottage is not the place for you.

Located one hours drive from Honolulu/Waikiki/North Shore, Makaha is close enough for day trips, but far enough away to enjoy a more natural, peaceful and casual Hawaii far away from the typical tourist hustle and bustle.

Makaha is known as the jewel of the Leeward Coast. A visitor can enjoy an authentic island style vacation
away from the crowds and hub bub of Waikiki. Makaha is famous for it’s winter surfing and was home to one of the early big wave surfing contests; the Makaha International Surfing Contest that was started the early 50s. Because of the 'winter' north swell the beach sand shifts dramatically from one end of the beach to the other. During the months of September/October to May /June (this varies depending on the direction of the swell) there is a large sand beach in front of the house. During the summer months visitors have to walk down toward the point several lots for the sand beach.

There are also diving caves, turtles, dolphins, whales and spectacular sunsets. There is a golf course minutes away as well as the harbor where a visitor can take dolphin and whale watch excursions, and deep sea fishing charters are also available. Centuries ago Makaha Valley was home to a group of Hawaiians (and their ancestors the menehune) who lived solely from farming and fishing. There is a ceremonial lava rock structure (He'iau) that has been restored by the Bishop Museum and is interesting to visit. Other amenities are the majestic Wai'anae Mountains

It is an uncrowded area and usually always has a lovely breeze coming down the valley.
Most of the proceeds from this rental go to take care of my cat sanctuary located in Honolulu where I live

Keywords: Located on one of the world's most beautiful beaches (Makaha Beach), a visitor is able to relax and enjoy ocean sounds, waves and great ocean views. There are amazing sunsets that can be seen from the front patio and lawn as they are steps away from the pristine sandy beach and clear blue ocean. One of the best buys in Hawaii for ocean front stays

Beach cottage on the ocean
If you’re looking for direct beach access that won’t break the bank, and are willing to compromise on location and upscale furnishings, this is the place. It has an authentic beach vibe, well appointed kitchen, comfortable day bed and regular bed, with a large library, kitchen table, in a spacious cottage. Downside is there is no AC but we were able to stay comfortable with the fans and ocean dips/cool showers. We found it to be quiet and fairly private, and although you share the beach access with the main house and the carport, we rarely saw or heard anyone else. Our one comment is that it would have been nice to be able to lock the screen door from the inside to feel more secure when sleeping in the porch area.

Paradise
My sister and I stayed at this property a couple weeks ago and it was perfect for the two of us. And what an amazing location! You are literally steps down to the beautiful beach which is also not very busy. It does have the shared yard but Gloria and Shaun are great and always made sure we were doing ok and it was great chatting with them and getting to know them. It’s not a fancy place so don’t expect that but property had all that we needed and would definitely come back to this amazing location!

Historic Beach Stay
My partner and I felt like we had stepped into the life and home of carefree surfers, when in fact we had truly stepped into the home of a surfing icon. While you won't find tourist amenities nearby, you also won't battle the tourist crowds. Instead, you'll feel like you have the ocean, waves, sun, and sand all to yourself. This is Oahu's best kept secret in more ways than one.

Relaxing beach stay
Check in was easy. The home was spotless. The location right on the beach can't be beat. Perfect for swimming, catching some waves or, if you're up for a swim, snorkeling. It was lovely to listen to the waves at night. Vickie's sister Gloria is a fabulous host and has a ton of knowledge on the history of the area.

Great
Loved the place. My only complaint is that there was no blanket.

About the host

Host profile image
I am a retired high school teacher and textile artist (Hawaiian Wearable Art). My youth was spent surfing at Makaha in the mid-50s. I lived in the cottage for many years and taught at the local high school (Wai'anae). After retiring I dyed and printed silk and had a small workshop and boutique where I made and sold my clothing, sarongs, hats, and other creations.
I have since moved to Honolulu where I live and have a rescue station and home for homeless cats. In case you are allergic to cats/dogs there are no animals in the cottage. A major part of the money I receive for cottage rentals goes to feeding, neutering, vet bills, caring for and daily feeding of 50 cats and dogs in need of food and shelter. In addition to the cats I take care of here I also daily feed four stations of feral cats and one station for two dogs. I still visit Makaha occasionally to swim and garden.
The cottage is adjacent/attached to our family home where my sister Gloria lives and is the site manager. She is a quiet solitary person and lives on the opposite side of the cottage. She will help out in an emergency, but not to bother or invade anyone's privacy.

Why they chose this property

My mother bought this property in 1956. After surfing for a few years in Waikiki she went out to Makaha to surf and visit a friend Jimmy Wong who she met surfing at Waikiki. There was a for sale sign on the property nexr door. She took one look at the ocean and another look at the valley and said, 'this has to be mine.' She lived a wonderful long life there until her 99th year. She was an amazing athlete, artist and mother. She spent the last part of her life writing Haiku Poetry. She can be seen on UTube-Betty Winstedt. There is currently a book in progress about her life.

What makes this property unique

Staying on this property epitomizes a Hawaiian vacation that experiences natural beauty at it's finest: the ocean, surf, mountains, palm trees, and clear clean balmy air. The summer does heat up as it is the dry part of the island. Not a fancy place, but very comfortable.
