An awesome property
Had a lovely time here and will be going back in the upcoming year. The booking was made by mistake as these cottages were closed for the season. We were made very welcome and Bob and Mary opened up a cottage for us to use and put in a heater to warm things up. We will def be back with our two dogs next year, and we absolutely loved Bear River.
I absolutely love staying at Millyard Rec in Bear River! The cabins have a unique style, are well maintained, and the location on the tidal river makes for such a peaceful setting. The real "pièce de résistance" is the night sky reminding us of the magnificence of the universe. Bob, the owner, is very personable and welcoming. I will be seeking refuge at Bear River for many years to come.
Warm regards, Claude
Lovely rustic stay
Bob was lovely. He was happy to help in any way he could. Very friendly.
It was a nice stay in average weather. Would have been great in sunshine!
Short Rustic Experience
Simple cabin as expected. Bob was lovely, and very friendly. Happy to help in any way. It rained the day we were there, otherwise we would have enjoyed the bbq area and seating.
Didn’t meet expectations at all- so disappointing
When I booked many months in advance, I had communicated with Bob, so I thought we had booked a larger cabin for four adults, but we upon arrival, we were crammed into a small derelict cabin, so the owner offered a cheaper rate. Good thing because the chairs and one bed were in sad state of needing repair or replacement. Nothing was clean: mattresses were covered in hair; bugs, candy and dirty socks left under and behind beds; all surfaces, dishes, linens, BBQ needed cleaning; showers and washrooms were moderately clean; when we looked at the other cabins, they didn’t seem to be as bad. Not sure why that cabin was so much worse than the others.
We didn’t know that we were supposed to bring our own sheets, but Bob, the elderly gentleman who owns and runs it, loaned us some. He was kind, and tried to accommodate us.
Bob commented that VRBO doesn’t tell him how many people are in the party, which seems odd because VRBO charged me an extra $20 for an extra person. Bob doesn’t charge for a fourth person, so he refunded the $20 to me.
I think he needs to have better communication with his VRBO guests.
He has built the campground himself, which is admirable, but carpenters and electricians would cringe. Obviously, Bob can’t keep up with the maintenance. The property has garbage and junk in several areas. He needs a serious cleanup crew.
It could have been great, but overall, we were very disappointed.
This property was incredible! It checked off all of our boxes, and even the boxes we didn't anticipate. I would definitely recommend this property to others, and I would stay there again next time I'm in the area.
Located on the edge of the village of Bear River, known as the Switzerland of Nova Scotia, and "the tidal village on stilts," shops are within an easy walking distance. Also nearby is the Bear River First Nations, Oakdene Center, with a variety of artist studios, and three restaurants.
The geographical aspect of Bear River is unique. Nestled in the valley between two steep hills, it is divided by the ever-changing rise and fall of the river.
Bear River is rich in the history of the shipbuilding tradition of Nova Scotia. Here, schooners and square rigged vessels were built in the numerous shipyards and sailed with their cargo around the world. Once a thriving seaport town, Bear River is now renowned for its natural beauty and the many artists that make their home here.
Also on the Millyard Recreation grounds is a common area building that features a farmer's and trader's market every Saturday in the summer season. A free space at the market is included with the fee of a cottage or campsite.
