A delightful stay
So peaceful! We've never stayed anywhere this quiet before - idyllic. Not even an aeroplane passed overhead. Our cockapoo was the most relaxed she's ever been and thoroughly enjoyed the use of the meadow opposite. The cottage was comfortable and well-stocked, even down to a blanket box full of board games which we made full use of each evening with our teenagers - quality family time. Colin and the staff at Vindolanda were very welcoming and helpful. A wonderful base to explore Hexham, Haltwhistle and Hadrian's Wall and ideal for walkers and cyclists. It's quite a way inland, so less suitable for anyone wanting to make frequent trips to the coast, but it's position is convenient for the northern Lake District as well as Northumberland. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - thank you Colin and the team.
Everything you could want
A terrific place to stay with a family. We particularly enjoyed the tranquility and the many walks that were possible from the front door, so there was little need for driving anywhere. Great museums close by, too, and a really comfortable place to return to in the evenings.
Great potential needs a housekeeping team in
We enjoyed our stay the welcome pack was amazing as was the location we did think it needed some attention to justify the 5 star tag. The cooker and cupboards need cleaning and some cupboards smelt damp Coffee machine is a mystery no instructions a cafetière would be better I’m being critical because it is expensive and it should be top grade. The cushions on the sofa are lead weights
Wonderful warm welcome, beautiful cottage with absolutely everything you need.
Family trip to Northumberland
A lovely cottage in a fabulous location.
We had a great week.
Property is spacious and well appointed,we were only two but it could easily accommodate six without feeling cramped. But still cosy without being too chintzy. Location is great with a lot the major local attractions on the doorstep or a short walk away.
Codley Gate Cottage is situated in a former farm yard amongst a cluster of old traditional farm buildings and the Farmhouse. It is approached via a quiet access lane (the old Stanegate Roman road) and is immediately adjacent to the World Heritage Site of Vindolanda and the Chesterholme Museum. Codley Gate is set partially in the Northumberland National Park and is just under one mile below, what is considered to be, the most dramatic section of Hadrian's Wall. The village of Bardon Mill just over a mile down the valley. The nearest town is Haltwhistle, 4 miles to the west and the award winning market town of Hexham is 14 miles east. The city of Newcastle Upon Tyne with it's lively Quayside and Baltic Art Centre is 35 miles to the east, whilst historic Carlisle 'Gateway to the Lakes' is 24 miles to the west.
Other Activities: excellent walking and bird watching country directly from the cottage
