About Clark Carlton
In addition to my work as a writer, I am the manager or owner of several beautiful vacation rentals in Kauai, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California.
Clark Carlton purchased this House in 2000
Why Clark Carlton chose Hanalei Palms
Hale Lu Ya is in Hanalei on the lush North Shore of Kauai, one of the world's most beautiful settings. The owners bought this house because of its proximity to town as well as the Crescent Beach, ranked as one of the world's best beaches by National Geographic Traveler.

We loved the location of this property! The house is decorated in a fun fashion. There are a couple of things that would have enhanced things for us that are an easy fix. We couldn't find a cutting board. Other than the cutting board, the kitchen was well appointed with lots of useful condiments, as well. It could also use a new coffee pot. Next time we will look for a place that has a covered lanai. There was a ton of rain during our stay which is not a big deal other than it would have been nice to enjoy the lighter times outside on the lanai. We loved the outdoor shower! The upstairs shower was too short for my husband and I. I'm 5'10". The kids loved the jetted tub. Thank you!
Hale Lu Ya
The house was perfect for the 4 of us...myself (Grandma), my son, daughter-in-law, & 4 yr old grandson. We didn’t do any cooking other than making coffee in the morning so I really have no rating for the kitchen facility, but there were lots of choices for packing lunches in plastic containers to take to the beach.
Our vacation rental
Great vacation rental! Comfortable and addressed all of our needs. Highly recommended! A+
Thanks so much! Hope to have you back!
Great place - 4 minute walk to Hanalei Bay Beach
We enjoyed our stay at this house. It's in a nice neighborhood and only a 4 minute walk to Hanalei Bay beach - one of the best beaches in Hawaii. The view from the back lanai of the mountains is gorgeous. As far as locations, this is about as good as it gets on Kauai. The small town of Hanalei Bay is also within walking distance where there is a grocery store, lots of shops, fruit stands selling smoothies and other delicious goodies, and several decent restaurants.
The house has Hawaiian style decor. The kitchen is small but had everything we needed to cook a few dinners and we had breakfast there each day. The house has 2 bedrooms both with King size beds. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom had plenty of towels. There were also beach towels for our use. Be aware there is no air condition as is the case in most houses in Hawaii. It was warm in the evenings but cools off during the night. Lots of fans are provided to keep the air moving. We enjoyed listening to the rain (usually during the night).
The North side of the island does get more rain than other parts of the island, although as I said, most of the rain was during the night. We had one day where it rained most of the day and there can be issues with flooding in town if it rains a lot.
There are close neighbors so you can hear people talking in the nearby houses, but everyone went to bed at a decent hour so not a big issue. Overall, this is a great place in a great location!
great house, greater location, greatest vacation
The Hale Lu Ya house in Hanalei was perfect for us, a family of four with two young kids. The location, about a 5 minute walk from one of my very favorite beaches on earth, was perfect. The house was clean, well-laid out, and well-stocked. The entire rental process was smooth and easy with just the right amount of communication. The price was fair for the value. I would/will stay here again in a heartbeat.
We just returned from a 7 night stay at Hale Lu Ya and we miss it already. It was the perfect little house for our family of four. You can't beat the location - less than a 5 minute walk to Hanalei beach and just a bit further to the quaint town with amazing restaurants and cute shops. We loved Pink's ice cream (went there 3 times!), Ama (Brussels sprouts, bao buns, ramen), kayaking along the Hanalei River, and of course boogie boarding at Hanalei Beach. We woke up every morning feeling like we were in the middle of a rainforest - birds chirping, roosters crowing, all the beautiful sounds of nature surrounding us. A few days of rain made for some epic waterfalls, we could see them on the mountain right out the back patio. The kitchen is up to date and well stocked with cooking tools, pots/pans, etc. We especially appreciated the blender so we could make smoothies. Beds were comfortable and our boys enjoyed taking bubble baths in the massive tub. It was a pleasure working with Clarke - he was very responsive during the whole process and checked in with us when we arrived. We will definitely be back!
End of the cul de sac of Piliko'a Street. No through traffic. Quiet area of mostly full time residents.
