Why Owner chose Kula
This is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
What makes this Cottage unique
The Star Lookout offers the visitor peace, tranquility and an opportunity to commune quietly with nature. There's nothing like sitting out on the deck overlooking the north and south shores of Maui, listening to the birds and contemplating the curvature of the Earth.

Very pretty location. Enjoyed quietude. Seems a bit over priced, no services in ten days.
Beautiful cottage, the views are outstanding. Peaceful and enjoyed the two kitty cats that came to visit. Was nice & cool, perfect change for a few days from beachside. Would definitely come again. Thanks!
The view and location EXCEEDED all our expectations!!! An absolutely unforgettable memory for us and our 2 small kids! The kids enjoyed running around the property, we enjoyed relaxing and enjoying the sunset view, axis deer and just being in awe and just being present. A perfect retreat from the resort life and side of the island. We enjoyed visiting with the grounds keeper and hearing of all their Alaskan adventures. Grandma’s Coffee House and Kula Bistro were AMAZING local food spots close by. We’ll be back, we seriously treasured our time at the Starlookout. ❤️
A magical place
This is our second time staying at The Star Lookout and it was even better the second time, if that is possible.
Ray is a wonderful caretaker and we always enjoy his unobtrusive company.
He chopped down fresh bananas for us to eat. The deer are fun to watch and listen to.
We went to Haleakala and the Lavender farm this time while in Kula. We always enjoy long walks down Thompson road and delicious drinks and food at Grandma's Coffee House. Thank you! Mahalo!
We’re so glad that you enjoyed your stay Upcountry! We love that you enjoyed the apple bananas and explored the upper reaches of the mountain. We hope to see you again!
Great upcountry hideaway
The property has one of the most beautiful views you can have on Maui. It is surrounded by a park-like landscape with lots of birds and deer. The house is well-furnished and had all we needed. Driving distance to the beaches and to the mountain top is about 45 min, to the next grocery store 15 min. Nice coffee shop and lunch place in walking distance.
BEST experience ever in Hawaii
We were at the Star Lookout in July, but I've delayed in writing this review because I wanted to take the time to fully acknowledge the level of quality, care and kindness provided in every aspect of our booking and stay.
We have been to Hawaii many times, on five different islands, and nothing has compared to this stay - not even our prior visit to Maui. The online photos and description of Star Lookout are very accurate, and the experience is as described by many other guests: beautiful, relaxing, private, inspirational, comfortable.
My interactions with the owner were so kind - she was always available to answer any question about the property or share any knowledge about the area. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcome by the caretaker Ray. He met us and personally showed us everything, and made it very clear he would be happy to assist us should the need arise. (Talking to him about his life's work was inspirational - full of great purpose.)
We live in a hot and parched region on the mainland, and being in upcountry Maui, twice we had a short rain that was a welcome refreshment! The environment was sunny but always cooler than the regions below us. I was not expecting to enjoy gentle wildlife all around us in the adjacent fields. You can see that the view is unparalleled, both day and night; and we found this location to be very, very convenient to travel around the mountain, over to Hanna, up to Lahaina where we took a ferry to Lanai (not worth the trip if there are swells in the ocean that block snorkeling visibility), and down to Wailea-Makena. We accessed all these areas easily and quickly from the Star Lookout. Groceries, attractions, dining were all within a short distance - and great coffee/pastries within walking distance!
I'd be amiss if I did not comment that we found the bed comfortable, the bathroom well-appointed and fresh-feeling, and the kitchen had everything we needed and more. There are decks all around, plenty of outdoor seating, and a living room with flat screen TV.
I hope we have the good fortune to visit this gem again, and I want to express our gratitude one more time to the owners and caretakers - you have creative and caring hearts. We felt like family in your home! Thank you.
Pam, we are so happy that you enjoyed this special place on Maui! For 20 years we have poured our hearts and souls into sharing The Star Lookout with others. We are glad that you discovered us on the slopes of Haleakala and hope that you will visit us again!
