Three Bedroom Fishing Village Saltbox
About Catherine Whalen
I am a retired medical professional who has spent most weekends and all my summers in this area of the Baccalieu Trail for the past number of years. When this property became available in 2001 my husband and I along with a family friend decided to buy it and restore it to its original glory and this year we decided to allow visitors to rent it and enjoy the same newfoundland experience we have been enjoying in this area for many years.
Catherine Whalen purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Catherine Whalen chose Ochre Pit Cove
This little gem is probably the oldest traditional saltbox home along the Baccalieu Trail and when the opportunity became available to purchase it, we didn't hesitate and it has been a labor of love bringing it back to life. Now it sits proudly in this great little fishing village.
What makes this Cottage unique
We have a large wrap around patio which give great ocean views and the interior is furnished with antiques and vintage, quirky re-purposed furniture.

Everything was lovely, inside and out. The house had everything you would want or need in a vacation stay. It was the perfect base for exploring Conception and Trinity Bay. The owner's suggestions of places to go were very helpful. We would love to go back!
Thank-You so much for the nice review. I'd love to see you come back anytime. Kitty
The Baccalieu Cottage is wonderful! It is so clean and beautifully decorated. As others have said it was a pleasure to look at all of the books, pictures and antiques in the cottage. Our stay was cozy and we had three beautiful days of sun. Northern bay sands is minutes away and a drive down the shore is a must!
Wonderful stay in a fantastic location!
The home owner is easy to communicate with, it's in a perfect location, and is a beautiful home.
Baccalieu Cottage, Ochre Pit Cove
We visited Ochre Pit Cove for a week in August and very much enjoyed our stay at Baccalieu cottage. It was exceptionally clean and well stocked and we didn't need to purchase anything but our food ( and wine! ). The location was central to our daily excursions and there is much to experience on the Avalon Peninsula. We especially enjoyed our walks on the boardwalk overlooking Western Bay where we were fortunate to see whales surfacing. This was our third trip to NFLD and we hope to return again soon. Thank you to our hostess Kitty Whalen.

Lovely Place to Stay
Our family of four quite enjoyed our stay. Kitty, was accommodating and quick to respond to us. We hope to be back again.
Thanks for the review, it was so nice to meet your little family, bring them back anytime, you will always be welcome! Kitty
Baccalieu Cottage is located in a small fishing village on the north shore of Conception Bay, Nl. The home is a refurbished mid nineteenth century fishermans home with all the modern conveniences. The area offers fantastic views along both Trinity and Conception Bays. There are icebergs in the spring and whale-watching is a favourite activity of guests at the cottage. There are also lots of opportunities to explore the rugged coastline and photographic opportunities are everywhere. Trinity Bay is just a short drive away and you can visit little coastal communities with names like 'Hearts Content, 'Hearts Desire' and 'Hearts Delight' to name a few. Northern Bay Sands Park is just a few minutes drive away where you can spend the day just relaxing on the beach or if you are brave enough, you can take a dip in the cold Atlantic ocean. Hiking trails are close to the cottage and the village of Grates Cove offers a great place to spend the day exploring. The nearby active fishing town of Bay D' Verde has a museum which will give you an idea of the way of life experienced by Newfoundlanders in days gone by. Just two minutes walk from the cottage you can watch the activity of the friendly local fishermen as they return from the fishing grounds with their catch. Carbonear is a larger town just 20 minutes drive away where you will find supermarkets, shopping and boat tours of the coastline.
