Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)
We live in southern Maine and love the mountains no matter the season.
Sharron purchased this Cottage in 1999
Why Sharron chose Woodstock
Our house is 5 minutes to Mt Abram and 15 minutes to Sunday River and 20' from the lake. Who could ask for more. I bought the property so my family could move from Mt. A. to SR as they grew. 'Rock Island' in the middle of the lake is truly fantastic and a gathering place for vacationers around the lake. We have met great people and enjoyed many hours just hanging out there. I bought the house after renting for 2 days... and that was when there was no shower or bath!!
What makes this Cottage unique
'the camp' as we call it has been our second home for many years. My kids grew up skiing at Mt. Abram and then Sunday River and swimming and boating on the lake. Their first boat, the Blue Lube, is the pedal boat and they were responsible for it when just 6 and 8 years old. They had to clean it and make sure it was tied up every night. We all love hanging out on rock island and jumping off. I usually bring a beach chair from the shed or make a soft spot with a few life preservers. We have even cooked marshmallows over a fire out there. Ice fishing and walking on the lake at night in the winter is marvelous. The stars are so bright.

Beautiful place, a bit too noisy
Beautiful place, close to water, great host. The only thing is that it's next to a busy road and it's never really quiet outside.
Right on the pond, just beautiful!!!
The cabin had everything we needed. It sits right on the pond. The Grandchildren were able to swim every day and we had a camp fire very night!!! Just wonderful, and relaxing!!!
Two very short days
My 3 granddaughters and I had a great time at the "camp". The girls really enjoyed the kayak, canoe and paddle boat. The camp had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable. I asked Sharron for good weather and we had it. What a lady!
Thank you Sharron,
Cozy and quaint
This property was great and very convenient for a ski trip. Very rustic and old school - no TV - which made it nice for the group to unplug. Once call out is the stairs leading up to the house were very slick and icy given the wintery conditions and we couldn't find salt, so had to purchase that to ensure the group didn't slip.
Glad you enjoyed your time. I’ll put a bucket of sand out for future guests. Thanks.
cute camp, nice lake!
So glad you had fun!
Nice cottage, setting, and location; just a few things to consider.
The cottage, the setting and the location were all very nice, and we all (two adults and four kids) enjoyed our week there. The cottage is a perfect mix of rustic and homey, and though it’s modest in size, its layout made it easy for the six of us to prepare meals, relax and entertain ourselves without feeling crowded or in each other’s way.
As long as casual paddling, swimming and fishing are your speed (which are for us), the pond (feels more like a lake) is ideal - not too big, and not too small. There are some nice canoeing/kayaking destinations that make for nice adventures - including a family of Bald Eagles nesting on one of the islands. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that there were hardly any power boats on the water - 2 or 3 sightings all week.
With all the benefits of the cottage, there are a few things that you do need to be aware of. For example, the proximity of Rt. 26, as pointed out in other reviews, is really pretty close to the cottage and lake’s edge, and yes as pointed out in other reviews car and truck noise is present. Rt. 26 isn’t a major highway, but there is fast moving traffic that can be heard and seen from the dock. I was able to ignore the noise after the first day, but my wife had a harder time of it. Also, there are train tracks on the other side of 26, and on at least a few nights during the week freight trains blowing their horns rumbled by at 11:00pm and 3:30am - waking and scaring members of our family. So, if you have light sleepers with you, you should be aware of this.
The sleeping arrangements have 4 bunk beds (2 sets of 2) and a full size bed in one large bunk room and separate bedroom on the second floor. Given the “rustic” nature of the cottage, the bunk room isn’t very well isolated from the dish washing noise and conversations downstairs. Again, not a deal-breaker, but something to be aware of when thinking about the fit for your family - for some this will not be an issue, for other with sleep issues, you should be aware.
Finally, in the spirit of being aware… there is no dishwasher or laundry on site. We used the laundry facilities at the camp ground on the other side of Rt. 26. Again, just some things to keep in mind when planning.
All-and-all, it was very nice stay.
It sounds like you had a really nice week enjoying the house and location with your family. Your "be aware" items are a great reason for prospective renters to read the entire property description and details before committing.
We are close to Rt 26 and in the "open window" months there will be some road noise.
