Location
The cottage has neighbours on either side nicely screened by mature cedars and fencing. The backyard is quite private; out front, it's a friendly area and people will wave and say hello when they are walking by. You can hunker down and enjoy a whole week right there, or you can take advantage of many great options to explore the wider area.
Being shore, it's mostly flat making biking and hiking smooth. Here are some of the bike/hikes you can choose from: ( of course you can drive to any of these spots too!)
Under 1 km to Lonely Island Beach: Also great for kids with an even longer shallow entry, just for a different view. There is a port-a-pottie on the spot. Go N on Bay Street from the cottage and then turn left/west onto the Causeway at Lonely Island Drive. Carry on for a circle tour around the island if you'd like, with a stop at the public dock. Use caution, there is Poison Ivy on the Island, but not to my knowledge at the beach area accessed off the causeway.
2km to the Campground Store: You will pass the Oliphant dock with public washrooms and several coves that are popular with kiteboarders. The campground store has an ice cream freezer. Go north on Bay street from the cottage to the stop sigh, turn right and the campground store is at the top of the hill on your right.
3km to Fen Boardwalk: The boardwalk through the fen has interpretive information about the unique flora and fauna of the area. Across from the north end of the boardwalk is access to a conservation area with swings that is often home to nesting egrets. Go North on Bay St 3 km and you will see the boardwalk on your right.
4.5km to Sand Dune: A large sand dune with picnic tables is a fun place to play! Go South on Bay street from the cottage 2km to South Oliphant Road. Turn left/east. At the stop sign, turn North. this is a busier road but there is a bike lane. You will come to the dune on your right.
Under 5km to Sauble Falls Provincial Park: You can see the falls from the road or pay the day use fee to go in and play in them. There are washrooms, playground, picnic tables and kayak or paddle boat rentals there too. Follow directions to the dune above but turn south/right at the main road instead. The falls will be on your right.
7km to the mouth of the Sauble River/North End of Sauble Beach: Follow directions to Sauble Falls above, turn right/west off the main road toward the entrance to the provincial park. Carry on following this road past a breakfast restaurant with view of the river ( at the Kit Wat motel) and a little grocery store. This road takes you to the lovely spot where the mouth of the Sauble River and the north end of Sauble Beach meet.
8km to 6th St Sauble Beach: follow the shore road 1 km further south from the river to find restrooms, a playground, and a lunch bar with scooped ice cream. This end of Sauble Beach is family friendly and much less crowded!

I love the Bruce Peninsula so much that both my home and my cottage are located here! My family keeps growing ( fourth grandchild recently arrived!) and we have shared so many wonderful times at Wind Rose Cottage. We hope you will love and enjoy it as much as we do!
