Why Char Casserley chose Kula
I visited Maui as a child, 11 years old, and decided then that Hawaii was my home. It took me almost 20 years to be able to move here. I fell in love with Kula and chose a property where I could own a horse and start a family farm. This lot on Holopuni was the perfect location for me. I love the weather with year around temperatures in the 70's. This micro climate is sunny most days of the year with cool afternoon breezes and enough rainfall to keep it green. There is very little wind yet has expansive views of both Haleakala, West Maui Mountains, Kahoolawe and Molokini islands as well as the valley with North and South shores views. I love the open vistas and thoroughly enjoy living in a quiet agricultural neighborhood with lovely long term neighbors. .
What makes this Villa unique
It was my dream to build my own home. I worked with an architectural designer to create a living space that feels like you are living outside when you are indoors. It is important to me to have lots of windows, natural light and take advantage of the views. I like being able to go outside from any room to enjoy the outdoors which creates a closer connection with the land (aina). I wanted our home to be elegant and inviting, a family home where we raised our kids and invited our friends. Our Island Sunset Villa is now yours to enjoy. We hope to make it warm, inviting, and comfortable where you have wonderful happy memories, just as we have.

The house was everything I had hoped it would be for the 3 couples who were sharing it. Very well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and great quiet location. Loved it.
Special home, enjoyable stay
We stayed for five nights and overall, enjoyed the property. The home is uniquely laid out to maximise the views on either side and the trade winds. It is also very thoughtfully stocked with everything one might need. The only real downside is that the house is in need of some TLC. It was built with so many cool features but does need some maintenance to bring it back to its old glory.
I had high expectations, but this exceeded them. What a lovely property with all the comforts of home! Very comfy beds and furniture, all beautiful. My oldest teen enjoyed his queen room and my two younger teens shared the room with two twin beds. They all shared the second indoor bathroom since my little suburban offspring weren't feeling like braving the cool outdoor bathroom that goes with the twin room. The master shower was AMAZING! We had a (nice?) view of the wildfires toward the end of our visit. The main lanai was fantastic with comfortable furniture. We appreciated the use of the good quality snorkel equipment, water shoes, boogie boards, chairs (there were at least six high quality beach chairs), and styrofoam cooler. We brought along a couple of full face snorkel masks from Costco which was well worth it, particularly to view the sea turtles at the south end of Makena beach. La Provence down the road had lovely cappuccino and pastries, though we mostly took advantage of the great kitchen and did most of our shopping at Costco and Target. (The closer Foodland, although convenient, was much more expensive.) The location was superb. Cooler and prettier than the lower, drier elevation and made for a much shorter commute to Haleakala. (A note on that, there was no way we'd get three teens to get up at four for a Haleakala sunrise. A couple of locals told us the sunset was just as lovely and, having seen both, I agree! Also no reservations needed for sunset though the parking lot fills up quickly). I've rented many homes through various websites for vacations...sometimes I get the feeling the owner tries to do the minimum, but had the exact opposite experience with Char's place. It has the "no expenses spared" feeling with high end linens, etc. Karana was SO helpful as we bombarded her with questions. Ask her advice and listen to it! She knows her stuff! We had decided to "splurge" and booked the last couple of days at the Grand Wailea, which was exceptional, but honestly, in retrospect, all five of us would have rather spent an extra couple of days at this lovely house. BOOK IT! You won't regret it. Also, be sure to eat at least one Maui gold pineapple. :) (Bonus: This house was way more economical than multiple hotel rooms and eating out all of the time!)
Fabulous, relaxing stay!!
Had a fabulous 5 night stay in this beautiful home!! Great place to get away from it all. Short drives in different directions took us to amazing days in Maui and the home and all the amenities only made it better.
away and quiet
We chose this property because it was not close to over-populated tourist locations -- but less than 20 minutes from major sites/beaches. It is extremely well maintained and clean, quiet, and cool (2800 foot elevation). The owner makes sure that the place is very clean -- they are a few minutes away and very responsive. One note: the outdoor bathroom facility (shower, sink, toilet in a stone structure with windows) goes with the twin-bed bedroom. It takes a little getting used to but all is well. Recommend highly!!
This is a special home in a special neighborhood. A rare find.
This home is very easy to occupy. The owner is very attentive and kind. Amenities were just perfect and could serve one person to a family. The house, grounds and neighborhood was pristine. The landscaping and views were over the top.
I am glad the guests enjoyed their vacation. It is important to me that guests are happy. This is my first review less than 4 stars. As a clarification, the photos are an accurate reflection of the views, the villa, the solid wood furnishings, and original artwork. We provide 6 beach chairs, 2 umbrellas, beach towels, fins, cooler, toys etc. The kitchen is supplied with 4 different coffee makers, 2 sets of cookware, bakeware, wine glasses, blender, setting for 12 etc. The glass doors slide into a wall for spacious indoor outdoor living. These do not have full screens. The villa is centrally located and has access to many beaches, waterfalls, restaurants, and farm markets.
We meet at the house and familiarize you with details upon your arrival.. There is an information book on activities, beaches, restaurants, groceries, golf, tennis, shopping, map, equipment rental for water sports, bikes etc.. This home is 1800 foot elevation so the climate is an ideal 70-80 degree year round temperature.
