Why Jamielee chose Grand Rapids

Pokegama lake is known as one of the premier vacation, recreational, and great fishing lakes in northern Minnesota. Bring your boat and tie it up to one of our docks or bring your snowmobiles to ride the many miles of groomed trails. Location - Fantastic! Accommodations - Lacking.
The setting on Lake Pokegama is absolutely wonderful. Terrific views, nice sandy beach, clean lake bottom and a nice dock for use if you want to bring your own boat. My family stayed here for 5 nights, renting all of the available rooms. Unfortunately, the accommodations left a lot to be desired, and the website photos and descriptions are misleading in some respects. What is not clear is that the owners and their young children live in the main house, above the "lodge" which is the walkout basement. There is at least one photograph that is not of any rental area -- a nice kitchen, which must be in the owners home. There is no hot tub, even though one is pictured. The website states that there is a washer & dryer "on request" -- however, when I asked about laundry I was told it is "in town, across from Culvers." All of the air conditioners in the "lodge" bedrooms were covered with plywood. The two cabins are exceedingly "rustic" with just bare plywood walls and the cheapest linoleum, etc. The beds had uncomfortable plastic mattress pads, worn and stained linens, cheap blankets & spreads... You get the picture. None of the rooms, bathrooms or kitchens were very clean. Two of the beds had sand in them -- obviously the sheets had not been changed! While we were able to get those beds changed on day 2, there was no more help to be had from the owners after that. On day 3 it was clear that we would run out of toilet paper. I requested more but never got a reply. On day 4 I had to search through a storage area to find some. It was pretty clear to us that the owners enjoy the income from these units, but really do not want to be hosts or go out of their way to make anyone comfortable. It is really a shame because the place has tremendous potential, if some investment was made. The units would be fine as a hunting camp or similar, but if you want a nice place to stay, look elsewhere.
Great beach, beds not so much
The beach, location and toys available for the kids to play with were all great. My only real complaint was the beds in the cabin. One room said it had a king bed which really was two very hard/uncomfortable twins beds pushed together. At one point I actually contemplated going to buy an air mattress but decided against it. Overall we had a good time, restaurants nearby which was nice. Communication was lacking at times from the owners as well.
Kids had a blast and we were able to relax that was really what we were looking for.
Awesome View of Lake & Great Owners
We had a large group of all guys going up along with 5 boats. They had plenty of room for vehicles and boat trailers along with plenty of dock space and beach to play on. The view from the property is incredible. Pictures don't do the place justice. We had all three cabins and fit all 18 of us easily. The 2 separate cabins are cozy but the main lodge basement had plenty of room for all of us to eat and hang out. Zorbaz was right down the lake and golf course right across the lake which made it very easy to get to by boat. The owners were at the lodge when we were there and they were very nice and easy to get along with. Definitely a place that I would recommend and hopefully be back sometime!
Mixed feelings
First the positives---the property is beautiful. Set on the lake with a sandy beach and sandy lake bottom (not full of weeds). Plenty of options for outdoor fun with floaties, a raft, paddle boats, a pontoon for rent, fire pit. Absolutely LOVED it! The downside--I planned this trip for my extended family and told them to check out this site and told them all about the accommodations which turned out to be completely inaccurate. Most of us stayed in the lower level lodge and there are no true king beds. There was one room with 2 twins pushed together and a king sheet set on it. Two rooms had 2 twin beds and the fourth room had 3 twin beds. ???? My sister and her family were booked for the #3 cabin and somehow ended up in the #2 cabin. Again, not the bed situation they planned on. We would've been fine with all of this if we had known ahead of time. You travel for hours with a weeks worth of stuff and are kind of stuck with the situation once you get there. Also, my sister's cabin had no silverware. Luckily, ours had 2 sets of silverware so we gave them one. We also shared a room in the lodge so they could fit everyone. There were plenty of dishes to use, but there was one trash bag, one extra blanket for the 4 bedrooms, and no extra linens. Also, it was very humid the first night we were there and it says there is air conditioning, but it did not work. Also, I was told the pontoon was $225 for the day. It IS $225 Monday - Thursday plus a $50 boat lift charge (???) and it's $350 in total on the weekends. Again, no mention of this until we got there. The owners were very kind people and I think they are new to this, but I think if they want repeat business they should be more clear on their site.
Excellent stay
My family and I had a wonderful stay at Pokegama Lake! We stayed in the lower lodge and it was more than enough room for the 6 of us. The unit was very clean, was stocked with tons of kitchenware, and had very comfortable beds. The view of the lake from the unit is amazing and the beach is really great. Only small complaint would be the high cost of the pet fee ($50 per night). But we would definitely stay here again, hopefully next summer!
