Pilgrims Rest Cottages
About Martin Brook
Having come for a holiday in 1997, with our then 5 young children, staying up the road, we took the plunge and moved. A great place to live, work and play - has to be given a premier UK resort where holidaymakers come for their holidays!
Martin Brook purchased this Cottage in 1997
Why Martin Brook chose Torquay
We love historical, olde worlde charm but all those types were in the middle of nowhere. To find, what turns out to be the oldest residency on The English Riviera, yet within a stroll of shops, but retaining the peace and quiet of a bygone age, was too good to pass.
What makes this Cottage unique
Rated by English Heritage of National Importance, these cottages are the only ones of their type found within Torquay. Dating back to the 15th century with links to the Spanish Armada and the Prince of Orange, now loving restored with historical roots but filled with modern day luxuries. To stay in such a place, yet have access to excellent local shops within a stroll, beaches, countryside and all that Torquay and surrounding villages offer, is brilliant.

So pleased you had a fabulous week with us, Tracey, here at Threshing Barn and our area; relaxing in the comfort of Threshing Barn that we endeavour to provide our guests after finding lovely places to explore from the personal information folders in our beautiful area of Devon, The English Riviera. You were super guests and look forward to your return next time you come down. Best regards, Martin and Kim
Perfect in every way
What an absolute joy it was to stay here, it was simply perfect in every way. The host (Martin) was very helpful & friendly and communications held prior to arrival were really good. On arrival myself and my family were welcomed into the Threshing Barn and shown around, the bottle of red wine that was offered tasted delicious after a long journey.
The accommodation was true to form, as advertised. We found it be very clean, furnished to a very high standard. It has all the services, accessories and appliances that you wound ever need. The location itself was great, walking distances to many shops, pubs and more. The surrounding area is great to explore either on foot or by car (the barn holds a lot of information about the surrounding areas which was of great assistance)
If your looking to take your family away for a nice break for the week, look no further.
We will most certainly be going back for more!
Dear Gary, we are obviously delighted to hear it was 'simply perfect in every way'. Threshing Barn was designed to welcome the extended family or families to come away, with all that they need for a great holiday but we do also like to provide those extras that can make for an even better time; especially the welcome gifts, as we are always grateful to guests when they choose us, as well as our own information folders - I have found, when going on our own family holidays how annoying it can be to stay in a lovely place but then not know where to go out for food or attractions etc - our folders reveal many gems in the area. Look forward to welcoming you all for your second visit. All the best, Martin and Kim
The Threshing Barn
Really shocked we didn’t have our own garden the access to it was up 4 steep uneven steps not suitable at all for our young granddaughters whom fell down them on our last morning. We were under the understanding that we had parking for 3 cars, but we didn’t it was for 1 car per property meaning 2 of our cars had to park out on the road. The Threshing Barn was disappointing it wasn’t clean , needs a good refurb, couldn’t use main shower for 2 days as in dangerous condition the owner did make it useable but still far from perfect. The stair case was hard to go up and down for our young and older party members. The main room lights failed as did the small bathroom ones did. No tumble dryer eek this was really inconvenient with small children 👶. We feel the price we paid for this property well exceeded what it was worth we are all very disappointed. We feel because of our 1st time experience was so disappointing we will not be recommending others to use your site. 😟😟
Many thanks for your review. It is a shame that you feel this way as, having 50+ reviews on Homeaway with an average rate of 4.9 out of 5, your review is, in our opinion unreasonable and out of character, which acting on behalf of the Owners (Martin and Kim) I wish to clarify.
You arrived on Saturday afternoon with 3 cars. There is parking allocated for upto 3 cars off street in the private parking area for Threshing Barn and more on street. However, you decided to park only one car in the private parking allocated and 2 on the ‘lane’. There was parking available in the private parking area when you arrived.
Sunday morning your husband approached Martin to come to the Barn. In front of all of your other guests, he complained that the downstairs shower was dangerous and unusable. Stating “having worked hard and paid top money this was unacceptable”. We could completely understand that your husband’s request was completely justifiable, but his approach was unfriendly and quite rude. When Martin (with your husband) inspected the shower indeed the shower door was loose. 2 runner screws needed tightening which was completed within 30 minutes of identifying the problem. Your 2-day claim of not being able to use the shower is false.
On the third day, the Owners were informed that a light had blown in an upstairs bathroom. No comment on the main lights. . This was replaced by the Owners the same day you reported the faulty and all in good working order on your return from a day out. Unfortunately, as you can appreciate lights do become faulty at any time. Your request was not ignored and dealt with very swiftly by the Owners.
You made no other comments during your stay.
The pictures and description on HomeAway clearly present that the outside is shared by all guests. We are sorry to hear your young daughter fell down the 4 steps on the last day, which you did not make us aware of during your stay. However, one would expect children of such a young age to be supervised by you. The spiral stairs are an historical part of the Barn and are clearly presented on HomeAway. A tumble dryer has never been advertised as there is insufficient space within the property to install one. Instead for guests we provide a washing machine and clothes line that can be used internally and externally.
Finally, the Barns are all professionally cleaned for new arrivals, spring cleaned ready for the season, with a further interim one, planned for September, post summer holidays. We do give you every opportunity, during your stay, to raise with Fresh Escapes any issues you may have including the representation of the property when you arrive such as the cleanliness or inventory. The issue of cleanliness was never mentioned to the Owners or Fresh Escapes during your stay as any issues could be been dealt with very promptly.
Regarding price, you are entitled to an opinion. If we consider that we have been renting to other guests for the last 10 years at similar prices for this entire time, we do not feel that you claim is justified. For 8 guests, Threshing Barn provides excellent value for money. Our calculations over your 1 week stay present that you paid £27 per person per day which in height of season is an extremely competitive rate.
Acting on behalf of the Owners we all feel quite saddened that you have posted such a negative review but wish you well on any of your future travels.

Holiday at Threshing Barn
Photos did not truly reflect condition of property especially the garden. I think the phots were taken quite a time ago. Insufficient garden furniture for all holiday makers. Tiny BBQ and rickety double wooden seat which had a broken table top.
Shower head would not stay in position and shower glass door had a door knob missing.
Dear Martin, I'm glad you had a lovely time in Threshing Barn though sad that we lost a star due to, in the main, your comments on the garden. I'm sure you can appreciate with the major, freak storm that has just swept the UK with 60mph winds and down pours the garden will not be at its best. In the pictures you see some hanging baskets, with at their bases some saplings - these were baby grapevines, now fully grown, with grapes enjoyed by guests when ripe.
On your concerns for insufficient garden furniture - there is oak table and seats for 8, rose circle table and chairs for 4, plus love seat and link with also sun loungers. You mention 'broken table top' but that is simply the 'removal link' for the love seat so that it can move around the garden.
Whilst there is a BBQ in the garden, sufficient for upto 4, there was also, at the gate our larger BBQ, in case of need.
On the couple of issues in the actual barn, I'm sorry that a shower head would not stay in position - I would have been more than happy to sort, had we been made aware, as you did, kindly with the missing door knob.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review - feed back is always helpful. Kind regards, Martin and Kim
