Perfect Spot, Perfect Location
I rented this property somewhat on a whim in lieu of a hotel. Basically what I wanted was a few days to relax before my friends arrived on the Big Island and enjoy some tranquility at a reasonable price. Needless to say that's exactly what this lovely home provided in the perfect location that is Kawaihae.
The house is a bit challenging to get to in the dark so hopefully you arrive in the sunlight. Outside of that I cannot think of a single flaw for a couple or single if they are looking for a lovely respite. The kitchen has everything one needs, the bed is extremely comfortable, and the outdoor shower is a real treat. The living area is tasteful and unpretentious.
Of course the highlight of the home is the lanai and beautiful landscaping shared of course by the geckos and birds. The gas grill is excellent and worked perfectly for my four day stay. If you are looking for a place to relax, be close to many of the Big Island's best attractions, enjoy the best weather on the planet, at a very reasonable price this is the place. You are close to Waipio Valley, Hawi, Hapuna Beach, Waimea, great snorkeling, restaurants, and within an hour of a number of other attractions.
The owner Kalia was extremely easy to communicate with and respects your privacy. She owns the 3 homes on the property so technically you share a driveway and structure. However she was never intrusive, nor did I feel I was sharing my space. I read some reviews stating they had a problem with the step-up but they are giving you a very false perception. You will have 1/10 the privacy and peace at a hotel versus this humble abode for less money and in a absolutely perfect location. I will hope to come back some day and the owner should be extremely proud of her hospitality and overall caretaking of this outstanding property.
What a view!
The view is truly awesome. The listing is very accurate. The host is available but not intruding. I can think of no cons to mention. The location is spectacular. While it is an hour from Kona , this is no negative especially since I was not that impressed with the traffic, etc there. It is close to the resorts, wonderful beaches and the north end of the island.
The road north from the airport is great.
We found plenty of dinner options- Seafood Grill in Kawaihae, Fish and Hog in Waimea, Tommy Bahama at MaunaLani, etc. Not to be missed Botanical Gardens near Hilo. Also there is a great fish market in Kawaihae.
The property and view are beautiful. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle. The owner is very easy to communicate with and definitely cares about the comfort of her guests. Unfortunately, we did encounter quite a bit of rain in the evenings which brought out the mosquitoes and limited the amount of time we could spend outside on the stunning lanai. Fortunately, all the windows and doors have screens so we could still enjoy the views from inside.
Stunning panoramic vistas
Great place! Spacious living area and sleeping area divided by a large pocket door that we left open, large kitchen, and wonderful outdoor shower. The deck with stunning views of the ocean was our favorite.
Two things to note -- the owner lives right next door, which was not an issue at all for us, but might be for others and, like the majority of private residences on the Big Island, it does not have air conditioning. There were ceiling fans, which cooled the unseasonably hot August weather off enough for sleeping at night.
It is always nice to hear a guest has enjoyed the home. I am a 70 yr old single woman, am very quiet and, and as noted in many previous reviews Totally respect the privacy of my guests. I usually like to meet guests once and often times do not see or interact again, unless someone wants to ask me about local knowledge etc, which I am happy to share. Its also worth noting that my garage is up the hill and therefor the parking lot and area next to the hale is allotted soley to my guests.
This home is built with one foot thick concrete walls, which not only supports the quiet but also serves to keep the interior much cooler than traditional island homes. In addition to the notable insulation quality of the walls, there are ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom as well as two additional portable fans if desired. Also the vast majority of the time there are steady light to moderate sea breezes or tradewinds to assist in natural cooling and comfort.
As these guests and other guests have noted this home is very comfortable inside and out throughout the year.
Precious Piece of Paradise
My husband and I spent 7 wonderful nights at Hale Pueo. This is a perfect spot for anyone looking for a quiet location to relax and enjoy the wonderful things that the island of Hawaii has to offer. Kalia has created a welcoming oasis that is very inviting and peaceful. We were fortunate enough to be able to pick ripe mangoes and limes from her fruit trees. The bungalow itself is impeccably clean and well appointed with all necessities provided. Snorkeling gear, beach chairs and umbrellas were also were available for the sunny beach days. The outdoor shower was our favourite! Kalia is very helpful but not intrusive. She respects your privacy. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and would not hesitate in recommending it to anyone looking for a unique Hawaiian getaway! Mahalo Kalia.
