Why Shawn Mathes Darr chose Gardiner
It's the Last Best Place! We purchased the property in April 2016 from the Stermitz family. It has been in their family for four generations. There is historic memorabilia throughout the property.

It was fun! We love old cabins like this.
Peaceful setting, great memories made.
Loved the wood stove and the primitive, minimal atmosphere. The kids loved feeding the horses.
Wonderful rustic cabin
Loved the property and cabin. Cabin, shower room & port o potty were clean and plenty of wood provided for camp fire. Our city dogs enjoyed it as much as we did. Close to Gardiner & Yellowstone.
Great alternative to camping
We stayed here with our 8-year-old for four nights while visiting Yellowstone and had a great time. Our daughter had room to roam, horses to feed, and things to climb. We kept cozy during thunderstorms and cool during the heat of the day, roasted marshmallows, chopped wood for the fun of it, and enjoyed the oil lamp lighting. The host Shawn was friendly and easy going and offered lots of suggestions when we needed them. I highly recommend staying here if you like to camp but don't want to haul all the gear with you on vacation; this place was a great way for us to thread that needle.
Enjoyable Stay At The Homestead Cabin
Our family of 5 enjoyed our stay at the Homestead Cabin. Property owners were courteous and attentive to our needs and made us feel right at home while giving us our space. Also provided bonus amenities including coffee maker, single electric burner, and toaster oven in nearby shed - a neat surprise! Plenty of firewood for indoor wood burner and outdoor firepit. Shower setup was really neat. Our kids enjoyed hanging out by the owners' horses onsite. Views from the cabin property of Electric Peak and Devil's Slide are amazing. My only suggestion for improvement which we feel would take the cabin experience up another level would be to trim back some of the trees, brush and grasses around the cabin and creek. Property was otherwise very well kept and Shaun did a great job of making us feel welcome and provided a number of little extra amenities (for example: smore supplies :)....to make the stay enjoyable and memorable. Thanks for a great stay!...
Full of character
We spent two nights at Shawn’s lovely cabin in Gardiner. Our family enjoyed the gorgeous skyline, the friendly horses, and the breeze that filtered through in the evening. Shawn’s attention to maintaining and preserving cabin’s original structure and to decorating it in a simple, elegant way made the experience particularly comfortable. Upon her recommendation we went riding and rafting with a local company and had a fantastic time!
