About Makaely Rois
Makaely Rois, owner and host of Savvy Seagull Studio B&B, is also a self -taught artist who enjoys and is inspired by the coastal waters and wilderness of Nanaimo, British Columbia which she calls home. A mother of four, who spent the child rearing years living on acreage in the Fraser Valley where the family had many animals including horses, dogs, cats, chickens and more. I’ve always been creatively active since I was young, with occupations mainly outdoors ranging from dog training, equitation, landscape, and home improvement. I worked alongside my husband Ralph designing and building homes for 35 years which gave her first hand experience with color, design, and woodwork. Fourteen years ago I turned my creative interest of drawing and painting into a small hobby, but as the kids grew, it became a full time commitment, deriving inspiration from her love of animals and the environment. In April 2015, we were finally able to move to my favorite place, by the sea in beautiful Nanaimo. It was my love of people and creativity which propelled me to open an art studio /B&B. I am just thrilled to be able to share my studio, our home with wonderful guests. As a mother, wife, artist, home designer, dog & equine trainer, I’ve lived my passion of sharing harmony of the heart and creative energy to both adults and children. In the art studio, Makaely Rois AFCA art works are passionate, strong with light, emotion and detail. Water and reflection paintings in blues and earthy tones are of particular interest, though she loves to explore many types of medium and methods of creating. Her works in watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, and fine woodwork, have been recognized with honors in international competitions.

Why Makaely Rois chose Nanaimo
We discovered Nanaimo, when Ralph was given an opportunity with a construction job here in Nanaimo. At the time we were renting in Saanich, but we liked Nanaimo"s central location. As people who love to hike, kayak, swim, ski and explore the mountains, shores and lakes, Nanaimo couldn't be more perfect. Besides the seaside life, mild temperatures, accessible location of the island, lack of insects like flies and mosquitos; we also enjoyed the convenience of the big box stores for building supplies, amenities, the friendly neighbors, and wonderful restaurants. For me Nanaimo holds fabulous opportunities for inspiration from scenic land and oceanscapes and a vast abundance of wildlife viewing opportunities, which made it an obvious choice as the place to settle.

Excellent host and suite!
This suite comes with a wonderful host - Makaely is one of the most sincere people I have met! She was very hospitable, helpful and always made sure we were comfortable and had everything for a pleasant stay.
The suite itself was very clean and well set up. There was nothing lacking at all.

Very Nice, Great Host
The Savvy Seagull is a nice, two bedroom unit north of downtown Nanaimo. The unit is the bottom floor of a three story home. The deck has a nice view of NeckPoint and a distance bay view. The unit itself is very clean, with modern appliances. There is a propane barbeque on the deck. The bedding and linens were clean, newer and fresh. The interior is nicely decorated. Plenty of kitchenware if you plan to cook at home. We were kayaking in northern Vancouver Island so this was a great location to be able to get out of town quickly. The host, Makaely, has a doctorate in hospitality. (She baked me a cake for my birthday. THANK YOU AGAIN!) Makaely was always easy to reach and willing to go the extra mile to take care of any question or need. Breakfast supplies are delivered each morning for you to prepare your food. A great coffee maker with coffee pods is included. Plenty of hot water for showers. Great natural light. The book case is full of ideas, maps and brochures of places to go and things to do. The neighborhood is very quiet and safe. A nice restaurant is about a 20 minute walk away from the house and we had dinner there several times. Even walking home at 11 pm, we felt safe. Their are 30 steps, outside, to get down to the unit. To summarize: this is a good choice if you need a smaller place to stay. We will definitely be back. If you and your guests are not able to navigate the 30 exterior steps or if you are sensitive to footsteps on the ceiling from the space above you , you should probably consider someplace else. Otherwise this is a great option with a fantastic host!
Thank you Frank for choosing my b&b and for your lovely and complete review of our place. I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay here and found the hospitality and the amenities enjoyable for you and Alyssa. Unfortunately you experience some traffic noise from the floor above, and that is regrettable. I had booked the suite for my own family's visit after your stay time, who were coming from the interior for a couple of days to visit us. As it was your birthday vacation and you wanted to have your daughter come to share the occasion with you, you inquired of my family that you could extend your booking dates in the suite which had been booked for them.
My family was willing to give up the suite to you but giving the suite up meant they had to camp out on the floor above you. That meant they had to sleep on air mattresses that went flat. Also they were not used to having to mind their walking habits as they moved around on the floor above you. They also had to bring their large dog which was awkward to keep it quite in the room. Though i pre disclosed to you of that potential, I'm sorry the noise was a disturbance to you. It is not something that happens as the middle floor is virtually empty. I've learned that I can no longer accommodate an extended stay if I have prebooked the suite for family. My apologies.
I very much enjoyed your visit and look forward to having you again.
kindest regards Makaely
