Explore an old Canadian city from Victoria vacation rentals

Visit stately, enduring Victoria and you can almost imagine you're in the mother country, thanks to its elegant Victorian architecture and fondness for that most British of traditions – afternoon tea. But look a little closer and you'll see another, more dynamic side to the city, one full of youthful energy and bohemian style, where you can down a brew in a colourful, hipster bar or see some world-class modern art, then head out along the bay for some high-octane fun on the water, with spills and thrills for kids and grown-ups alike!

History

Victoria was home to First Nations people for hundreds of years before the first settlers arrived in the late 18th century. By the mid-19th century, it was a tiny settlement of 500 people. The small settlement became a big city, and was declared the capital of British Columbia in 1871. As well as strolling the Victorian streets, you can visit historic sites such as Craigdarroch Castle, or head down to the Royal BC Museum to learn about both First Nations people and the European settlers and Chinese immigrants who spurred on the city's expansion.

If you're the active sort, this is perhaps the best city in Canada for cyclists, with plenty of bike trails going across the city and beyond, and good-value bike hires available from several spots downtown. Victoria has a population of 360,000. It's the state capital of British Columbia and sits on the southern end of Vancouver Island, just across the water from both Vancouver and Seattle. It's a safe city, and violent crime is rare, though do watch out for pickpockets and bag snatchers in busy areas. In an emergency, you can call 911, but for non-emergencies, you can call the city police force on 604 717-3321. Just as in the US, you should tip around 15 to 20% in bars and restaurants, as service is not usually included in the bill.
