Staying in Prince Edward Island vacation rentals

One of Canada's Maritime provinces, Prince Edward Island is the perfect place to dial down the volume a little. Fancy waking up to stunning natural scenery from your cozy cottage rental, or heading out to take in Charlottetown's Victorian architecture? How about lacing up your boots to explore the island via the Confederation Trail, then refuelling with super-fresh locavore dining? Vacations on Prince Edward Island are all about relaxing and taking your time, however big or small your group. The usual PEI itinerary includes the Green Gables Heritage Place for "Anne of Green Gables" fans, the 1846 Point Prim Lighthouse – the oldest on the island –and Prince Edward Island National Park, the most stunning of the province's parks.

Although it's the smallest province, plucky little Prince Edward Island played a big role in Canada's history. The historic 1964 Charlottetown Conference, where Canadian Confederation was debated, took place at Province House, the seat of PEI's provincial government. Literary fans, of course, will know that Prince Edward Island was the setting of Lucy Maud Montgomery's much 1908 novel "Anne of Green Gables," and if you want to see PEI through Montgomery-tinted spectacles, Green Gables House in Cavendish is the place to do it.

Things to do

Things to do around Prince Edward Island vacation rentals

The provincial capital, Charlottetown, is a good place to start sightseeing. The downtown core is dotted with Victorian-era buildings, and you can catch a show at the Confederation Centre of the Arts after touring the historic Province House. Prince Edward Island National Park encompasses the Green Gables Heritage Place, making it double the fun. Several old lighthouses offer top sunset selfie opportunities, and there's no better way to end the day than with seafood that's so fresh it might just swim away off your plate if you're not careful.

How to get around

Navigating Prince Edward Island from your vacation rental

Teeny tiny Charlottetown Airport is the gateway to PEI for travellers arriving by plane, although flights are pretty limited. Once your boots are on the ground, T3 Transit operates several public bus routes across Charlottetown, along with a few other routes that venture beyond city limits. There are taxis on offer, although trips to rural areas might sting your wallet a little. The 470-km Confederation Trail is popular for seeing the area on foot or on a bike. Exploring PEI on two wheels is particularly popular in the summer, although there are no designated bike lanes.

Food & drink

Sample Prince Edward Island's local food and drinks

Fresh, locally caught seafood is always top of the menu at Prince Edward Island's restaurants, and the lobsters, oysters, and mussels are particular highlights. You can even time your vacation to coincide with the PEI International Shellfish Festival in September. Farm-to-table meals are a big part of the PEI culinary scene, and you can expect those veggies to be fresh out of the field. Send yourself off to bed with a nightcap courtesy of one of the local wineries, distilleries, and breweries.
