Experience perfect island holidays in Nassau vacation rentals

Colonial charm meets urban excitement in Nassau, the capital city of The Bahamas. Once the stronghold of pirates like the infamous Blackbeard, today it's a tropical paradise that draws sun worshippers from all over the world. Choose from seaside villas, posh condos, beautiful houses, and other Nassau vacation rentals and you'll be all set to experience the best the city has to offer. Work on your tan on the secluded beaches of Paradise Island, have a splashing good time with the kids at the water park, or pick up Bahamanian crafts at Lyford Cay.

History

Established in 1670 as Charles Town by British nobility, Nassau was briefly occupied by the Spanish and French in the early 1700s. By 1713, the town had become overrun with pirates, including Edward Teach (Blackbeard), Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. The Pirates of Nassau Museum holds pirate paraphernalia including cutlasses and flintlock pistols, and exhibits about marooning and pirate trials. Vacation rentals in Downtown Nassau will also put you close to the 18th-century Queen's Staircase, a series of steps carved out of solid limestone by African slaves in the 1790s, and to Pompey Square, the site of slave auctions.

The cheapest and most popular mode of public transit is the jitney, a minibus that can seat up to 32 passengers. However, jitneys aren't allowed on Paradise Island, which is only a 30-minute walk from Downtown Nassau. You could also rent a car or a scooter, or take a water taxi instead. Ferry boats run between Nassau and Paradise Island daily.

Great eats are never far away from Nassau vacation rentals. In the Arawak Cay area – also called the Fish Fry – you'll find restaurants whipping up mollusc meat into mouthwatering dishes like conch salad, conch chowder, and scorched conch. Rock lobster is another seafood delicacy, usually served broiled or chopped into tiny pieces for salads. You'll also find rum not only in cocktails, but in local delicacies as well. For dessert, try guava duff. It's a boiled or steamed sweet dough that contains guava and comes with a drizzling of butter rum sauce.
