In general, Maui's climate is warm and humid all year round, with two main seasons. Winter runs from November–April, and is rather wetter, but it also brings the best surf and the humpback whale migration. Meanwhile, shoulder season (May and October) can be a bit quieter. The east side of the island and the higher ground see a lot more rain, with the central "valley" being much drier.

It's a largely unspoiled island of vast volcanic landscapes, pristine rainforest reserves, vibrant coral reefs, and sandy beaches. The majority of the island is made up of a hulking shield volcano called Haleakala, and the Haleakala National Park is home to a host of rare species. Out in the water, there are a number of protected marine reserves, so strap on your snorkel and you might find yourself coming face-to-face with the famous Hawaiian green sea turtles.

The nearest airport is in Kahului, HI (OGG), located 8.7 mi (13.9 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you might consider flying into Hana, HI (HNM), which is 21.4 mi (34.5 km) away.

If you're traveling by train, make your way to Lahaina Sugar Cane Train Station or Lahaina Sugar Cane Train Kaanapali Landing Station and explore the city from there.
