Lazing on the beach and hopping between tavernas can wait a while for you to drive out of Polis and explore the wild Akamas Peninsula National Park. It's considered one of the most beautiful sections of the whole island of Cyprus, jutting into the Mediterranean Sea with its eucalyptus-scented bays and thick forests. A 4X4 is needed to really delve within, but it's worth the switch to a vehicle on account of the mysterious waterfalls and mountain biking trails. Boats are the best option for getting to the beaches, where loggerhead turtles lay their eggs.
One reason Polis holiday rentals are so popular with more adventurous folk is that they occupy a fine location on the edge of Chrysochou Bay, right between the Akamas Peninsula National Park and the heights of the Paphos Forest. The upshot? Outdoorsy types will have oodles to be getting on with, whether that's hiking though dense cedar groves or quad biking across dusty flats, seeking out gushing waterfalls where Aphrodite once washed, or heading on turtle safaris in national reserves.
Polis is the ideal base camp from which to explore the beauty and intrigue of Cyprus. Holiday homes are just a short distance from places like Petra tou Romiou, a legendary rock formation off a pebbly beach that’s the rumoured birthplace of Aphrodite, and Tomb of the Kings, a large, ancient necropolis with subterranean tombs. Other highlights include Cape Greco, a dramatic cliff with panoramic views and colourful marine life for snorkelling, and Akamas, a cape nature reserve with a lagoon and wildlife.
As in so many resorts across Cyprus, a lot of the tavernas in Polis shut up shop for the colder months of the year – December, January and February. Interest in Polis holiday rentals starts to pick up again in spring, as early as April. That's when the walking is excellent in the Paphos Forest and nearby Akamas Peninsula. Summers run from June to August, bringing the scorching post-30-degree heat and the unending sun – beach weather extraordinaire.
Polis is surrounded by some of the most amazing countryside Cyprus has to offer. The untamed Akamas Peninsula National Park extends out westwards, awash with pinewoods, pine scrub, dirt trails and countless little coves. Wildlife spotting there is excellent, what with sea turtles and oodles of blooming wildflowers come spring. The Paphos Forest is another place for nature lovers. That rises with the Troodos Mountains to the south-east, heralding cedar groves and rare raptors.
Polis has an array of beautiful beaches suited to all types of travellers. Holiday homes can be found near beach locales like Latsi Beach, a popular swimming spot with a pebble beach and seaside amenities, and Polis Municipal Beach, a quiet beach with calm waters for swimming. You’ll also like Yiannakis Beach, a relaxing beach with ideal wind and wave conditions for watersports.
