The many faces of Heraklion

There are many sides to Heraklion. There's the modern side, awash with clean condos and Heraklion holiday rentals for the whole family. There's the old side, a kernel of winding lanes that emerge onto bustling plazas, the towers of Orthodox churches above, souvenir touts in every alcove. There's the ocean side, with hulking ferries forever arriving from all across the Aegean – the town's the main gateway to Crete. And there's the inland side, where the city leaves off and the ruins of ancient Knossos Palace take over. Which will you explore?

Things to do

Heraklion joins with Knossos

No trip to the capital of Crete could possibly be complete without at least a glimpse of the erstwhile capital of the mighty Minoan Empire. That can be found partially restored, partially left to lie, up in the dusty hills just to the south – don't miss the blood-red columns and ancient throne rooms. Back in town, an excellent museum – the Heraklion Archaeological Museum – helps to unravel the Bronze Age past of that palace complex, along with the other 3 millennia of civilisations that have called this corner of Crete their home.

Activities

Discovering the coast from Heraklion

After you've tasted the gritty Greek coffees and munched on dakos in the traditional tavernas of Eleftherias Square, you should be sure to head out of Heraklion and hit the beaches. The capital is the prime gateway to the sands and shores of the eastern island. The most famous of the lot is probably Malia, but only because it adds in hedonistic bars and clubs to boot. For more pristine and empty coves, you could try the hard-to-get-to bays of Palaiokastro, or keep on going towards secluded Tripitos and the blue waters of Vai.

Weather

Heraklion heats up nice and early

Crete has perhaps the most enviable location in all of Greece. It sits to the south between the Libyan Sea and the Aegean, and gets hot early in the year and cools nice and late. That means the spring, in months like April and May, can throw up beach-worthy weather, while autumn – September, October – stays warm and balmy. They are both great choices for booking Heraklion holiday rentals to avoid the crowds. Summer is peak, with Malia booming and the mercury reading, occasionally, in the 40s…

Natural features

Heraklion – a fold of east Crete

Heraklion meets the Mediterranean Sea on the eastern side of the island of Crete. It sits in a fold between the mountains, which can be seen rising and rising to the clouds behind the city. They won't level out again until they hit the soaring summit of Mount Ida at 2,456 metres – a snow gatherer. Head along the shore and the coast remains relatively low going eastwards, peaking and dipping with the occasional headland and pebble beach. Westward, it goes to high cliffs – where olive groves cling tenuously to the mud – that drop dramatically to hidden coves and inlets.
