Tavira started life way back when the Phoenician Greeks sailed across the Mediterranean to seed their colonies at the end of the Iberian Peninsula. That occurred sometime around 1,000 BC, before the Romans arrived and created the trading port of Balsa, on the coast, close to where the town sits today. However, modern Tavira was begun with the Moors, closer to 700 AD. They built the Castle of Tavira, which can still be seen – half-crumbling and overgrown – between the cobbled lanes and whitewashed buildings on the west banks of the Rio Gilao. The Christian reconquest of Iberia brought bloody battles to the town in the 13th century, while a great earthquake in 1755 helped to decimate the salt production industries that once dominated the shores, nearby.
