Alegria del Mar (Joy of the Sea) is a handmade home located two miles south of Trinidad in a quiet neighborhood, perched on a marine terrace with panoramic south and west-facing ocean views. The private, southern exposure of this comfortably sized 2 1/2-bedroom, 2-bath home provides expansive views of the Pacific and Cape Mendocino, the westernmost point of California.
This custom-built home features hand-hewn salvaged redwood beams, red oak floors, cathedral ceilings, and the exterior covered with natural cedar siding. Sitting on a spacious three-quarter acre property, the home features an array of artwork gathered from remote corners of the earth. This home blends international décor reflecting the wide-ranging interest and far-flung travels of a family of explorers.
Surrounding the home are extensive gardens and a secluded patio. At the end of a garden path lies the cliff’s edge, the perfect place to watch the sunset or watch the surfers below at two of Humboldt County’s most well-known surf spots, Moonstone Beach and Camel Rock.
Alegria is owner-managed. We take great pride in ensuring the experience from reservation to check-out is efficient and informed. We live nearby so our guests have the piece-of-mind knowing we’re there when you need us, but your privacy is respected.
Our nightly rate is scaled based on the number of guests so smaller groups feel welcome. Our rates are discounted for stays of a week or more, and we are open to extended stay discounts in the equally delightful winter months.
More about Alegria del Mar…
Our 2000-square-foot, 2 1/2 bedroom home accommodates up to eight guests with a dining room table that seats eight and an ocean-view kitchen with enough room for two or three cooks. Most rooms look out to sea, south and west down the coast. With the sound of waves making landfall hundreds of feet below the environment is naturally meditative. Outside are extensive Monet-style wildflower gardens, a secluded patio with Adirondack chairs, and a seaside perch 250 feet above the sea. It's two minutes and two miles to Trinidad markets and restaurants, and one minute from the freeway, but the soundscape is oceanic. It’s just a 5-minute drive to expansive beaches, State Parks, vast lagoons, hiking trails, secluded coves, and dramatic offshore sea stacks. Ten minutes north is Patrick's Point State Park, and a short distance more to Prairie Creek State Park, the centerpiece of Redwood National Park. For cultural amenities, just head south 15 minutes to Arcata, a lively college town that is home to Humboldt State University.
In addition, Alegria includes works by Alegria's resident artist, whose paintings and photographs starting at ages nine and ten are featured in the living room and upstairs bedroom. Alegria is a one-of-a-kind treasure, warm, cozy and inviting, with an eagle's eye view of infinite horizons.
While Alegria is located just outside a seaside village, once within its perimeter one enters a world of one’s own, with a timeless spaciousness, grounded in the earth and ocean, yet soaring on the wings of gulls and sea breezes. The seaside town of Trinidad is surrounded by open beaches, secluded coves, dramatic cliffs, and offshore sea stacks. No traffic and a variety of scenic environments within a ten-minute drive.
