About Renate Huckle
After many years of being a GP in South Devon, where we enjoyed boat building, sailing, renovating houses and where our 4 children were born, we decided to move to the countryside to live a different life and try farming. After much searching we found the perfect place, unspoilt and secluded Bradford Barton in the middle of Devon, on the Two Moors Way between Exmoor and Dartmoor with a large enough farm house for all of us and many substantial, interesting barns in quite good condition.
Renate Huckle purchased this Cottage in 1991
Why Renate Huckle chose Witheridge
The farm consists of 150 acres of lovely meadows surrounded by high hedges, ideal for any wildlife. After a lot of work on the farm house and the cottage we are very lucky to live here and now manage 3 productive apple orchards which supply our 250 year old cider press for apple juice and cider making in October/November each year. We have 3 old decidious woodlands as well as a beautiful 10 acre arboretum with 330 specimen trees, some on red list and a recently planted 10 acre grove of 350 Giant Redwoods (Sequoia dendrum Gigantium). The best tree for carbon capture over the whle its 3000 year lifespan.
What makes this Cottage unique
At the moment we keep a flock of pure bred Poll Dorset sheep as well as completely free range chickens, ducks and geese. There are 3 ponds and our visitors have total freedom to explore the farm and the farm buildings, the orchards and the tree plantations. At lambing time we are happy to let them experience this amazing time (bottle feeding the lanbs etc.) and in the autumn they are welcome to help, if they wish, with the apple harvest and the pressing. Should anyone really wish to help out with any other jobs around the farm, they are always welcome, yet this is definitely not expected.
