Nice location but simply not clean and nearly impossible to communicate with owners.
We really wanted to like this place. Really. Nice balcony with a view, conveniently located in Villard-de-Lans, near ski lifts, hiking, sightseeing, etc. Unfortunately we simply couldn't get over two major problems: The place was simply filthy, and the management non-responsive. The apartment looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the last ski season. We had to not only clean before we left, but also clean WHEN WE ARRIVED. The floor had dirt everywhere, the showers were dirty, the kitchen was dirty. Even worse was the stress of checking in and checking out. The woman who was to let us into the apartment was extraordinarily difficult to work with. Admittedly, we are not native French speakers, but we can manage for weeks at a time in France without a problem. Not in this case. The manager is allegedly supposed to read text messages, but never responds to them - ever. When talking to her on the phone at arrival time, we were parked in our assigned parking space - which she had never heard of - and spent over 30 minutes trying to find her. We even had a native French speaker talk to her, and there were still difficulties in communicating the most basic information. She'd never heard of Wifi. She didn't know where "The Book" was (containing info on the apartment and surroundings). We emailed, called, and texted her and the owners multiple times over two days regarding our check-out plans and only at the last minute (an hour before we were going to leave the keys on the table and walk out) were we able to raise the manager on the phone and get her to arrive.
I think if the place was properly cleaned (and there's really no excuse for it not to be cleaned) and the owners/manager were responsive to communications, this would be a fine property. As it is, our family did not find it worth the hassle. I really don't like writing negative reviews, and have only had to write a couple after staying at dozens of vacation home rental destinations. I felt it only responsible to write this review after our disappointing experience. Be very wary if you book here, and ensure that all possible scenarios are discussed with management WELL in advance, and preferably in writing.
I understand there may be extenuating circumstances involved to which I am not privy, but it's the responsibility of the owner to ensure that their management agent responds to checkin/checkout requests, and verifies that the property is kept up after each guest leaves.
