Excellent Property but Remote Location
Want to escape the tourist-plagued Southern peninsula and experience Island life?
A great choice is this engaging site overlooking the neighboring island of St. Eustatius. The sound of surf echoes throughout the house. As for equipage: Excellent cook wear. rather than that battered at most rentals. Even a breadmaker. Curious.
Excellent Wi-Fi and cable TV. (Bring your log-in information for Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and others.)
Dieppe Bay town is at the northern tip of the island. Our taxi driver at the airport required an incentive over the set rate. Taxis, then, are at best an expensive alternative.
As for car rental: Beyond the challenge from cartways opposite US standard, the narrow circumferential road is often unpaved with vertical rebars protruding along the verge in one section. Most challenging: In hamlets, parked cars force vehicles to alternate in a serpentine ballet. (Opposing drivers seem to allow only inches clearance -- quite remarkable were one only an observer.)
A viable alternative are busses, in actuality vans distinguished by green plates. They are dirt cheap. Ask a local for help finding a "stop".
Groceries in Dieppe Bay seem limited chiefly to beer, though a thin stock includes eggs, margarine and bread. Further along the road is a better stocked shop, but best are supermarkets in Basseterre opposite the bus terminus..
Management should consider installing kitchen, bar and bathroom ground-fault outlets. Likely these are not island-standard.
Also kitchen and bedroom smoke detectors, especially important given the double-keyed, double deadbolt front-door locks, as well as instructions to bolt interior doors, including that to the bedroom.
That said, Dieppe Bay is a regional headquarters for police, and locals insist that the area is crime-free.
It was the perfect place for us
The perfect place on the quiet side of the island right on the ocean. A charming little town that gives you the feeling you have stepped back in time.
This seemed far from the hectic cruise ship side of ST Kitts. The little restaurants served fresh lobster and fish along with authentic West Indian food. We loved the experience.
get away from it all
We had a marvelous four weeks here in January. 2020. This property is in a relatively secluded, non-touristy part of St. Kitts. Listening to the ocean crashing outside all day and all night was wonderful. We spent many days just relaxing on the deck. As well, the property manager, Cheff, was a gem. Always upbeat, always helpful. Those looking for fine dining and resort amenities should look elsewhere. But for those looking for a genuine slice of caribbean life, this place is difficult to top.
Great place to hiseaway
If your idea of heaven is a wooden beach hut far from the madding crowd, this is it. Loved the kitchen with hatches and bar so I could cook and be with my friends. You can explore the deserted Golden Lemon in next door, have a drink on the beach at Arthurs bar (200 m) and have fun catching buses round the island. But mainly we just watched the waves roll in and chilled.
Thank you for your lovely review Joan!
You did exactly what my husband and I do everytime we are there! The waves crashing over the reef mesmerize you! We can watch it all day long! It's such an amazing spot!
I'm glad you walked through the ruins and the village. Did you get to read the untold story of Treasure Island in our library? The history of Dieppe Bay is in that book along with the ruins you walked through. I wonder if there is any buried treasure in our area!
We are happy you had a lovely time and hope to have you back again soon!

Thanks Bob for leaving a 5 star review. I really appreciate it! I know that you wrote no meaning you didn't want to leave a written review! Cheff told me you had a wonderful time! We hope to have you back again soon!
Far and away
This home is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow that is simple and clean with an open-air kitchen (watch out for the mosquitos around sunset) to a nice outside deck and pool, right on the edge of the ocean where the Atlantic and Carribean meet. The land below is made-up of volcanic rocks and the crashing ocean waves can be very rough and noisy at times. The (very cold) pool is shared with the bungalow next door and has a potential of lack of privacy. However, when we stayed, the bungalow next door was vacant so it was great. There is an air-conditioner but only in the bedroom. The bungalow is on the opposite side of the island (a 25-mintue bus ride or drive) from all modernized restaurants and stores. There is a small one-room store with some necessities within walking distance, as well as two one-room bars with a small selection of beers and very limited spirits. There are also a couple village so-called "restaurants" (which are really one-room shacks with a couple of wood picnic tables) that offer local homemade dishes, but their menu is extremely-limited (two to three options) and once they sell-out their daily menu, they close for the day (usually before dark). If you are looking for a place far away to experience the rustic "local village" way of living, this is for you.
Cheff, the property manager, stopped by daily to make sure all was well, to offer island insight, and travel assistance. The island roads are very narrow and the local traffic drives very fast, so driving around the island can be quite a challenge for the inexperienced. The local 15-passenger busses are readily available to hail on the one main road around the island, and only cost $1.50 one-way to take you to Basseterre, the major (port) town. The island has some beautiful sights to visit. Romney Manor, Brimstone Hill Fortress, and Black Rocks are must sees.
Almost everyone we met on the island were very friendly and helpful, and we always felt safe. Overall, it was a nice, but very rustic-style vacation, far and away.
Dear Cheryl and Larry,
Thank you for writing your review! We Appreciate each and every one of them that we receive!
Thank you for pointing out the differences of being in the countryside of Saint Kitts! That's exactly what we believe we posted on the description of our property!
The waves crashing over the Great Barrier Reef play an ever-changing Symphony! As you are falling to sleep in the evening, the waves are like counting sheep in the Air conditioned bedroom.
You must have missed Arthurs Beach Bar, an upscale beach bar and searves great food, also Kittitian Hill in Dieppe Bay is a 5 star restaurant hotel with a shuttel to enjoy their fine cuisine!
Cheff did a fantastic job painting both the interior and exterior of our Villa. Cheff paints our Villa every year as we are so close to the black sand beach , that our property is sandblasted with the winds that come off the Atlantic and the Caribbean day and night. So it is important that we do painted each and every year which we do in October.
Some of the beautiful antiques that we have are from all the wonderful plantations of a bygone era that Arthur Lehman from Architectural Digest pulled together to create the ambiance of Ernest Hemingway retreat!
Our Villa has been in Vogue magazine, Town and Country and American Way, American Airlines magazine.
We have a brand new rattan sleeper sofa with the most comfortable mattress and cushions! The linens and towels are updated each new season.
We also added a new dinette area in the air-conditioned bedroom to make the warmer days more comfortable and if there's a driving rain a place to enjoy your meals.
Sometimes the pool is a little bit chilly, but that's usually after getting too much sun and I'm overheated. It is refreshing as our temperature in St Kitts is a constant 85 ish degrees.
There are a few mom and pop shops locally and the next village has a larger place to get basic groceries. Downtown has 3 major grocery stores. Rams, IGA and Best Buy. I always take a small cooler with a few frozen items to get through the first day. I find it easier after travelling.
Driving is much easier than taking a taxi, I like having control of my situation. Letting someone else take control scares the heck out of me to! Driving on the opposite side of the road always remember the driver is in the middle of the road and you'll never make a mistake.
Thank you for choosing Key house Villa and hope to see you again
