------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capitol Hill is one of the largest historical districts in the United States. It originated with boarding houses for Congress and the craftspeople who built the US Capitol, the White House and the Marine Barricks. Today, it continues as one of DC’s most dynamic neighborhoods, with over 30,000 residents. There are multiple parks and playgrounds, and a diverse mix of restaurants, bars and specialty shops, concentrated around Eastern Market, Barricks Row and H Street.
H Street
The apartment is adjacent to H Street. Take a five minute walk to H Street when you arrive, and tour Linden Court Alley, which is on historical DC’s walking tour and today hosts more than 10 photo-worthy murals celebrating Washington, DC and its residents. H Street features multiple breakfast and brunch spots, including Bullfrog Bagels, The Pie Shop, Milk & Honey and Hiraya. Maketto transitions from hand crafted lattes and pasties in the morning to fine Pan-Asian dining at night and Daru is rated among DC’s top restaurants by the Washington Post. A variety of additional dinner options are also within walking distance.
H Street hosts a Whole Foods and Giant grocery, as well as a weekly farmers market from April through December.
H Street also hosts the first Starbuck’s “store for signing and the hard of hearing,” a nod to nearby Gallaudet University. Toki Underground, is routinely listed in the top ten ramen restaurants in the United States.
Step into Joy of Motion for a la carte dance class or Hot Yoga for a sweaty cleanse. You never know who will be your workout partner at H Street’s two Cross Fit gyms.
The National Arboretum is just a five minute drive with free parking and lots of picnic spots and photo ops in its Bonsai exhibit and the original columns from the US Capitol.
Union Market is DC latest culinary hotspot, with a large food market and adjacent restaurants. It lively most days of the week, with a variety of events and shops.
Eastern Market
Eastern Market is open daily and features flower shops, fresh produce, a fish monger, butchers and a bakery. On the weekends, it comes alive with a flea market, with vintage finds, fine handiwork and DC souvenirs from local artists.
Barracks’ Row
Lined with a variety of restaurants from Ted’s Bulletin, known for its pop tarts to Rose’s Luxury.
Throughout the year, the US Marine Barracks hosts concerts free to the public, including a marching band playing songs from Capitol Hill resident John Phillips Souza. The Capitol Hill Community Center is a well-preserved example of a Civil War Hospital.
The US Congressional Cemetery is the final resting place to many members of Congress and Capitol Hill residents, with a Halloween spooktacular that’s not to be missed.
