The most perfect holiday cottage
Wow what a beautiful cottage. So cosy, warm and comfortable. I was blown away at the extent to which the owners had gone to furnishing it. They thought of everything. I have stayed in a lot of cottages over many years and never have I found one so well equipped with everything you could ever wish for. Loved Chime Cottage so much that on the first night of our stay I booked to return in a couple of months
The property was cold, difficult to find and very difficult to access with a car. The key box was hard to open. Parking is an enormous issue in the village and on top of this we were asked by the neighbouring property owner not to park outside her window.
The property is fair enough a quirky historic cottage. This also means however that many features are poor by modern standards. The kitchen is spread across two separate areas, the upper floor is reached via a hazardously steep staircase and all rooms have very limited lighting. We felt the description given of the property had not sufficiently forewarned people of these things and we certainly would not recommend the cottage for children or people with mobility issues. Gaining hot water is not straightforward. Two electric fan heaters are provided though neither are very efficient and one smells.
Turning the TV on is complicated and only very limited instructions are provided.
We were unable to fully discover how the heating controller worked and radiators were only ever warm. We used the wood burner in the sitting room and had it roaring. At no time could the room have been described " like a sauna " however.
In fairness the weather was constantly wet and we were significantly prevented from going walking - a main attraction of the area. The cottage is not somewhere nice to stay on rainy days however and facilities for drying out are limited. In the end we decided to call it a day and came home a day early.
Good morning Geoff.
I am so sorry to read this upsetting and rather distressing review. It's so hard not to take any negative feedback personally when we take such pride in our beautiful cottage - as you can tell from our excellent reviews which I'm sure were instrumental in making your vacation property selection.
I think the overall sadness here is communication. Had you reached out regarding any of the issues you had encountered or were encountering, these would have been addressed immediately.
Specifically regarding some of your points - in a village and property of this age, the roads are what they are and whilst a little narrow and windy again cause little issue for us or our many guests - unless there is snow and ice which always makes things fun! The heating control is a very simple dial to turn up or down - we will of course provide more detailed instructions as you feel this is necessary - likewise for the TV, we appreciate the feedback regarding controls.
As per our property description (and detailed access information available on the HomeAway/VRBO site) we have our own parking space located just around the corner from the cottage on Far Hill , next to our garage and garden and would sincerely hope our guests would park here or on the lay-by a little further past the cottage, rather than directly outside a neighbour's window.
The modern and recently serviced combi-boiler provides instant hot water, so we will be looking into this as a matter of urgency.
In summary, I can only apologise that the unique quirkiness and charming character of a 17th century cottage and its surrounding area which usually delights guests was not to your taste, and that the weather was not on your side.
The fact that the cottage is the most idyllic and cosy place to hunker down during miserably wet weather is something we will simply have to agree to disagree to.
Rain aside, in no way should, could or would Chime Cottage ever be worthy of a 2 star rating - we would simply not allow it.
Lovely little cottage for a base in the Peak District
Thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the cottage. Cosy fire with ample logs and kindling, comfy beds, and no issues experienced
Only slight challenge we had was somewhere to hang our wet stuff after a very wet day walking but apart from that :-)
Lovely cottage in beautiful area - a great first family holiday
This stone cottage is a real home from home and the owners have put a lot of personal touches into making it a lovely place to stay. We stayed in January for a week with our 6 month old daughter for our first family holiday and made use of the travel cot and pushchair which were both in great condition. The neighbours were friendly and helped us locate a high chair which was also much appreciated.
The wood burner in the living room is a really nice feature and the cottage is decorated very well - it is also extremely well equipped and has lots of day to day items stocked in the kitchen and bathroom which made life easier.
Contact with Barry the owner was easy (via the Homeaway app) and he responded really quickly and was happy to help.
The local area is very scenic and there are lots of walks in the local area, or from the village itself. Bradwell has a good fish and chip shop, a lovely sandwich shop (The Bakehouse) and a convenience shop (Co-Op) that has most things you would need. Visiting in late January did mean that some of the tourist attractions were closed but we had plenty to do and were lucky enough to get quite good weather - we made use of the "Brill Walks" book in the cottage to guide us around Edale and Calton Hills.
I would recommend this cottage and would like to return one day as this was our first trip to the Peak District and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
The only thing my husband would change if he could was the height of the doorframes - he did bang his head several times but it didn't detract from the charm of the cottage!!
Thank you so much for the time taken to write this lovely review.
We absolutely love it when our guests enjoy their stay and our lovely cosy cottage.
Apologies for the head-banging - we are very used to it now (and the bumps!) and so glad this quirky "feature" did not detract from your visit.
We look forward to welcoming you back in the future and if there is anything further we can help with, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
Chime cottage is a lovely place to stay, very cosy and comfortable, especially in the living room next to the fire. It is situated in Bradwell, which is a really nice village with a few pubs and shops. We went without a car but were able to find plenty of good walks and things to do, with lots of walking routes and Castleton a 10 minute bus ride away. We would definitely recommend.
Thank you so much George
We're delighted you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you bak in the future!
Bradwell sijaitsee ihanteellisella paikalla Peak-alueen sydämessä. Siellä on Castletonin luolia, nimittäin Treak Cliff Cavern, Speedwellin maanalainen Cavern, The Blue John Mine - kuuluisan Blue John Stone -koti - ja Peak Cavern, joka tunnetaan yleisesti nimellä "The Devil's Ass!"
(varaus on suositeltavaa).
