Excellent location for exploring Peggy’s Cove, Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg.
Comfortable accommodation, clean and well equipped. We enjoyed a restful week. Lots of good seafood restaurants and small villages.
Shore House Stay
I was nervous after reading the review before us (owner should really respond to that review to put other's minds at ease) but when we arrived at the Shore House, found it to be exactly how advertised. A very fair price. House is clean and comfortable. Has everything you need - oh, except a cork screw (cutlery seen better days so we bought some from Dollarama). I had sent a message to the owner regarding the previous review, but didn't hear back, so I was quite disappointed by that. I did call the owner's Mother one day (she was the given contact person) regarding the water as I was not sure about the salt. She answered my questions adequately. The salt water was not pleasant for showering....but they do provide a water cooler and plenty of bottles for drinking so that's a plus.
Trellis Cafe we found over priced and over rated. Tuna Blue Bar & Grill across the bay we really enjoyed. Great service there and great food.
Rhurbarb Restaurant amazing and so is White Sails Bakery.
4 Way Stop Restaurant great value for money!
Market on a Saturday morning is fantastic! A short walk up the road and it's a bustling, beautiful market.
We enjoyed some time at the Bayswater Beach. A nice spot.
Overall a good stay at the Shore House and good value if looking for something a bit less pricey than being right on the water. Would be much improved with a wrap around deck at the front of the house to sit and look out at water (which is across the road) rather than having to view from front lawn, though that would likely drive the price up. The deck at the side of the house is private, but no view.
Thanks for your comments, Trina.
In response to your suggestion that I should respond to the earlier, one-star review, I must say I was so taken aback by that review, which seemed mean-spirited, that I didn't think responding would be particularly helpful. My family and I love this house and spend time at it every summer (most recently last week), and so it has been disappointing to receive negative reviews.
That said, we take constructive feedback seriously, and have made some improvements. Brand new living room furniture was delivered last week (it had been ordered well before the previous review). The salty water issue relates to the water softener, which had not been functioning optimally. That problem was addressed last week (after weeks of trying; there's a single service company we needed to get) and should now be resolved. There's brand new bedding in the master bedroom. Your review is the first I have heard about the house having no corkscrew. It used to have one, but every season a few things break or go missing. We will remedy that also - thank you.
I agree that a wraparound deck would be lovely. Also a dock! The deck the house does have is new and quite large, but you are right that the view of the water is limited. We are working to improve the view - we have hired a tree service to remove some of the trees and shrubs that currently obscure the view of the water (should happen this fall).
Thanks for staying with us.
I SHORE wouldn't stay here again!
Location: QUIET home base for visiting Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay, Lunenberg, and Halifax.
Beds: You would get a better night's sleep on a rock at Peggy's Cove. If you require your guests to stay for a minimum of 5 nights, a decent bed would be nice.
"Light-Filled" is spot on, as the window coverings are thin, and being summer, you will be awake with the 4:30 a.m. sun.
Baths: Leave your luggage downstairs, because that is where the only bath/shower is located; no sense in hauling your clothes up and down the stairs.
Downstairs bath: the sink did not drain, and some of the linoleum tiles are coming up and need to be replaced.
Upstairs bath: there is no outlet, so if you need to prepare for your day at the same time as others, you are out of luck as the only outlet near a mirror is in the downstairs bathroom.
Water: The house is on a saltwater softener. While they do supply guests with plenty of bottled water, you will feel like you are brining yourself when washing.
Living Room: The furniture is grungy and smells musty, as do the throw blankets, and the throw pillows are missing buttons.
Rhubarb, on the way to Peggy's Cove is a MUST!
Tuna Blue Bar and Grill across the cove was a great late-night spot for small bites and a drink.
Salt Shaker Deli in Lunenberg serves a FABULOUS menu on the deck overlooking the bay.
The Shore Club - is SHORE overrated!
And the pièce de ré·sis·tance:
Arriving at 5:45 p.m., we entered to a warm, musty house that had not been cleaned from the previous guests. Dirty towels, unmade beds, old food in the fridge, wastebaskets full. We messaged Chris, and called Anne at the number provided. Anne came by the house and SHOWED US WHERE THE LINENS WERE TO STRIP AND MAKE THE BEDS, in case she wasn't able to reach the housekeeper, as she only has her email address. We proceeded to strip the bed and wash the sheets and cleaned out the fridge, as we had purchased groceries on our way in.
Chris finally messaged us back a little after 7:00 "Very sorry. I understand the house is being cleaned as we speak. This has never happened before - I’m sorry it happened to you."
At the end of our stay we let Chris know that we had started a load of laundry and checked out. His response, "Thanks! Hope you enjoyed your time in Hubbards!"
It's all about customer service, and you won't find that here.
P.S. This has never happened to us before, either.
We thoroughly enjoyed our one week stay. The property was exactly as advertised. Very clean, comfortable and well equipped. Fantastic location for day trips on the South shore. Nothing was very far away. Very convenient to the highway. Also, several great restaurants, a grocery store and a drug store right around the corner. I would highly recommend it!
Tucked away on a quiet road this house has it all. Beautiful views, easy access to shopping, restaurants, bike trails and highway. We would definitely stay here again!
Lovely spot, friendly village atmosphere
Shore House is simple and adorable, no frills but all you need for a cozy stay. Owner graciously refunded us for the last night after we had to depart early due to a storm approaching. Hubbards Cove is delightful in late October...quiet but still plenty to do and see. Trellis Cafe is fabulous. Locals were warm and friendly everywhere we went. This spot is perfect for exploring by car in all directions. Only drawback to this property is low water pressure in bathrooms. All else was more than fine. Price is very fair.
