Perfect Getaway in a Tranquil Setting
The Barnette is beautifully situated surrounded by mature trees, the peaceful sounds of nature, and a plethora of stars in the night sky. To experience this property brings a calm and gentleness within ... a feeling of gratitude. The interior decor is unlike any rental property we’ve stayed; the walls are adorned with unique art from local artists. Most mesmerizing are Allyson’s own encaustic art wall panels — a collection that includes the use of mother nature’s treasures like seeds, petals, leaves and more. The large 20-art panel piece I most enjoyed is one she created by using crushed eggshells. It is fantastic and immensely creative! This property offers so much more that can be put into words. Simply put, we LOVED it—ABSOLUTELY will rent again if we are lucky enough to secure a booking.
And, there is so much to do in relatively short distance: first, start by walking Allyson and Scott’s arboretum and botanical gardens, Hortus Conclusus, a walk up the road. The myriad of plants and edibles they have cultivated is astonishing. They were so kind to give us a basket of nature’s bounty—peppers, zucchini, chard, kale, arugula, tie dyed tomatoes, myoga ginger, paw paw and more...as well as the most delicious eggs from their hens.
For some physical exercise and to experience the surrounding beauty of the area we enjoyed: (1)Hiking Minnewaska State Park-the hike to Lake Awosting is a must. ($10 per car); (2)Hiking from Mohonk Preserve Spring Farm Trailhead ($15 pp) up to Bonticou Crag mountain in the Shawangunks; if you are daring enough and able, rock scramble the Crag. The view from the top is SPECTACULAR!! And, you can take the trek back to the parking lot avoiding the scramble descent; (3)Trekking through Bluestone Wild Forest (Free) and around Onteora Lake. (Off State Route 28); (4)Trekking through Ferncliff Forest (Free) in Rhinebeck; a MUST is the 80 ft. Observation tower climb. The view from the top of the 109 steps is incredibly stunning!! (Make sure to duck down before getting to the top platform.) If you like birding, we were fortunate to spot several black throated blue warblers and a yellow bellied sapsucker.
A definite is the drive to Woodstock. We enjoyed the vibe, the shops and the wooden guitars on display throughout the town painted by local artists.
For grocery, the BEST market is High Falls Co-op; a bit pricey but worth the spend.
Thank you Allyson and Scott; terrific hosts!!
Nature Lovers Paradise
We had an amazing experience at the Barnette. The space is wonderful, cozy but still spacious and nestled right into the woods, with plenty of natural light and views into the trees.
Upon our arrival, there were a half dozen fresh eggs from Allyson's and Scott's chicken coup and a carton of arctic kiwis right from their incredible international botanical garden next door. The deck was great for stargazing on clear nights (DEET-free mosquito repellent was kindly provided for us.) Deer occasionally passed through the property, and when it was cool enough at night we opened the windows to let fresh air in. The window and door screens were bugproof-tight, and the ceiling fans kept things comfortable (ours was a summer visit, obviously) and we only used the a/c sporadically. The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, and with plenty of farmer's markets around, anyone who likes to cook will be very satisfied. Our trip coincided with an open house at Hortus Arboretum, Allyson's and Scott's global botanical garden, which is a must-see in itself. The Barnette is an hour or less by car from rail trails, waterfalls, forest hikes, mountains, excellent restaurants (The Hash was our favorite), and grocery stores in Stone Ridge and Kingston. We highly recommend the Barnette and we will definitely be returning. Thank you Allyson and Scott!
A peaceful getaway
Thank you Allyson and Scott for your very cozy accommodations. It was my first time using a french press for my coffee, and it really was delicious, along with learning patience. I loved the team too. Thank you for the fresh eggs, they were delicious
The weather was perfect, which made your barnette even more enjoyable. Everything was clean and it was a very peaceful site to "just be" for the wknd. It was just the perfect distance from all my visits to Mohonk mountain(lemon squeeze hike if u like a challenge),Minnewaska state park for amazing waterfalls),and even the Ashokan reservoir(an endless visual beauty) on the recommendation of the friendly bartender from butterfield's restaurant(try the salmon, it was delicious). Thanks again.
Thank you Sue for staying at the Barnette. We are happy to host you anytime!!
