Fitness-friendly vacation rentals grow in popularity, according to VRBO

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 9, 2018 – Two popular New Year’s resolutions, get fit and travel more, are merging in 2019 according to new data from VRBO®. VRBO – the site travelers use to book beach houses, cabins and condos – analyzed internal data and found that demand for vacation homes that included the term “yoga” grew 65 percent year over year, while demand for “fitness centers” and “gyms” grew by 40 and 30 percent, respectively [1].

“It’s no secret that wellness travel has become a trend in recent years, but we’re seeing groups taking advantage of the cost benefits of organizing DIY wellness retreats in a vacation home rather than an expensive resort,” said Melanie Fish, VRBO travel expert. “Travelers are seeking out vacation rentals with added amenities, and a gym is on the top of their list. VRBO also has a number of properties with trendy workout equipment like Pelotons.”

Travelers are using VRBO’s nearby activities filter to plan their itinerary. The most popular activity filter year-round is “golfing and leisure activities” with “skiing and snowboarding” closely follow with spikes in demand from September through January and “fishing” and “hiking” from May to August [1].
