Lovely lodges, exquisite A-frames and secluded woodland retreats: Vrbo’s most popular properties of 2024 are proof that we’ve all caught cabin fever
One of the biggest trends to come out of Expedia’s recent Unpack ’25 report? JOMO Travel—that’s the “joy of missing out.” And Vrbo’s 1.4 million Instagram followers are ahead of the curve. The list of our top 10 most-liked homes of the past year reads like an instruction manual for escapism: remote mountain A-frames, secluded lakeside lodges, and log cabins far out of reach of cell service. These are the places to relax, unplug, and revel in the joy of doing nothing much at all.
Bethel, Maine

This forest retreat is fit for all seasons—but fall is particularly special

Natural materials reign, from eco-friendly clay plaster to rattan fixtures
Total likes: 264K. Surrounded by mountains, forests and waterfalls, the pretty Maine town of Bethel is the jumping-off point for adventures, whether skiing at Mount Abrams or Sunday River in winter or striking out on hiking and biking trails in summer. Just outside town, set on its own six acres, this recently built A-frame is a sharply contemporary mountain base. Inside, soaring wooden-clad ceilings, rattan light fittings and a poured concrete kitchen island give a tactile, natural feel. While outside, the après-ski starts in the hot tub and finishes around the fire pit, stargazing over s’mores.

Aglow atop a hill, this hideaway offers a warm welcome after a snowy hike

Good friends, good food, and a roaring fire—what more could you want?
Total likes: 185K. At the top of a hill, deep in the Hudson Valley, the Willow Silo is the perfect “near-far” escape. It’s near enough to the funky diners of Phoenicia (15 minutes) and artsy Woodstock (10 minutes)—and only a couple of hours’ drive from New York City. But it’s far enough away from civilization for you to feel like the only people around for miles up in your wooden tower overlooking the trees. For a serious hike, follow the trail up Overlook Mountain to be rewarded with knockout views. Or take a lower energy approach to soaking up nature from the silo’s hammock.

This beautiful converted barn could have been plucked from a fairy tale

Pancake mix and Vermont maple syrup are provided for rustling up treats
Total likes: 178K. Just 15 minutes from Stowe—dubbed “fall’s color capital”—this one-of-a-kind home is magical whatever the season. In winter, cozy up around the indoor and outdoor fires or snowshoe across fields in the property’s 300 private acres. In spring and summer, swim in the pond that’s just downhill, then swing by the original Ben & Jerry’s in Waterbury for ice cream. But it’s when the trees surrounding the barn turn vivid gold, copper and scarlet that this place will really take your breath away. Simply snuggle under the covers in the master bedroom with its huge windows and take in nature’s beautiful show.

Backed by majestic mountains and trees, a strikingly designed den

All-wooden surfaces evoke the sounds and smells of the outdoors
Total likes: 156K. Montana might be known as Big Sky Country, but here on the beautiful Bitterroot River, this is fly-fishing country. With mountains climbing away on both sides, the river runs through cottonwoods and ponderosa pines as eagles and ospreys swoop overhead. On the riverbank, the angular Skwala Lodge is named after a type of fly that hatches on the water in spring, attracting huge numbers of trout. After a big-catch day, kick back and listen to the vinyl collection at this impressive four-bedroom house before falling asleep under huge skylights looking up at that famously vast sky above.

Breakfast on the bluestone ledge by the ancient boulder, anyone?

Floor-to-ceiling windows and an open-plan layout add to the calm
Total likes: 125K. What do you do when the plot you want to build your dream home on has a huge, 12,000-year-old boulder on it? For New York-based architect Christian Wassmann, the answer was obvious: Build the house around it. The rock in question was deposited by a prehistoric glacier in retreat and is now encircled not by ice, but by a glassy living space and undulating roof. It’s not only a design marvel, but a sustainable one too: Solar panels on the roof produce more energy than the house consumes, and the sloping angles funnel rain into a water-harvesting system. The perfect example of living at one with nature.

Green space meets modernist architecture

Curved sofas and floor-to-ceiling windows follow FLW’s distinctive style
Total likes: 83.5K. It’s no wonder this spectacular Hawaiian home found so many fans on Vrbo’s Instagram. For starters, it was designed by starchitect Frank Lloyd Wright, with his trademark curved lines taking the form of a run of floor-to-ceiling, panoramic windows that frame a view of three volcanoes. But it’s also supremely comfortable, with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a meandering living space furnished with FLW design classics, and outside, there’s a hot tub built into natural lava rock.
