AUSTIN, Texas – May 18, 2021 – Vrbo® reveals the fastest-growing travel destinations for vacation this summer. Though it’s no surprise that families are heading to sunny beaches, destinations near lakes and national parks are also emerging as top choices for the holiday weekend.
Destinations with fastest-growing demand for Vrbo vacation homes during this year’s Memorial Day weekend include :
St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Broken Bow, Okla.
Grand Teton, Wyo.
Caribou-Targhee and Yellowstone, Idaho
“Families are ready to get together at a Vrbo vacation home for Memorial Day this year to celebrate the unofficial start to summer,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “With many traditionally popular beach destinations getting quickly booked up this summer, some families are heading to alternate vacation destinations near lakes and national parks to enjoy hiking, fishing and camping together.”
A Memorial Day weekend like no other, demand for Vrbo vacation homes has increased over 20% this year compared to the holiday weekend in 2019 . Additionally, while the long weekend has always been popular for family vacations, many families are eager to travel and stay even longer this year – Vrbo has seen an over 25% increase in demand for seven-night stays compared to the same holiday period in 2019 .
With the gateway to summer open, families can take advantage of new tools and features Vrbo has introduced in the past year to enhance the traveler and booking experience, including:
Cleanliness - Families looking for information on cleanliness can look for the “Cleaning Practices” section on property listings and use a search filter to find properties with the highest cleanliness reviews from other travelers. Hundreds of thousands of properties include information about the enhanced cleaning practices hosts are implementing, and former guests have provided cleanliness reviews on millions of Vrbo vacation homes.
Flexible cancellations - More than half a million Vrbo properties already offer more flexible cancellation policies. Vrbo made it even easier to find these properties by highlighting listings with the most relaxed cancellation policies and creating a search filter for families looking to narrow down their search.
Book now, pay later – Vrbo recently teamed up with Affirm to provide a more flexible way to book and pay for vacation homes. When booking a Vrbo property, approved travelers can select Affirm at checkout to split the total cost of the booking into monthly payments, and families can use the search filter to find properties that offer Affirm.
Trip Boards – Trip Boards makes it even easier for families to plan trips by enabling everyone to participate in the decision-making process. With its new polling feature, each family member can vote and rank their favorite properties so the group can easily decide on where to stay and book before someone else does.
Flexible dates – Searches for Vrbo homes in popular destinations include a banner with information on property availability for families that have flexibility with their trip dates. The feature provides a birds-eye view of the number of additional properties available if travelers were to shift their stay dates by a day or a week.
Before booking, families should check for travel advisories and restrictions in their vacation destination and always follow health and safety guidance from health officials and local authorities. Visit this help article for more resources and information.
