Vrbo reports another boom in drivable destinations

Vacation rental data shows families traveling closer to home

AUSTIN, Texas – Sept. 9, 2021 – As families plan their fall travel, Vrbo® data reveals vacation rental demand for “drive-to” passageways is on the rise again amid the surge in COVID-19 cases.

Demand for Vrbo vacation homes for short-distance trips up to 250 miles has increased by over 20% compared to this time of year in 2019 [1] and makes up nearly 40% of stays booked [2].

Families continue to opt for domestic destinations because of constantly changing international travel restrictions and border closings. Top travel corridors on Vrbo this fall include those within a few hours’ drive [3]:

  • Atlanta to Miramar and Rosemary Beach, Florida (300 miles)
  • Atlanta to Panama City Beach, Florida (300 miles)
  • Dallas to Broken Bow, Oklahoma (170 miles)
  • Los Angeles to Palm Springs, California (100 miles)

“Though we saw families fly and venture farther from home earlier this summer, we’re seeing many travelers revert to nearby destinations like we saw in the early days of the pandemic,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert.

Vrbo data also indicates a busy “second summer of travel” taking over the fall “shoulder season” when vacation home stays in popular beach destinations traditionally slows. With delays in return-to-work timelines and remote work schedules, travelers are also booking longer stays. Demand for seven-night stays on Vrbo has increased by over 35% compared to 2019 [1].

Families should check for travel advisories and restrictions in their vacation destination and always follow health and safety guidance from health officials and local authorities. Visit this help article for more information.
